Every once in a while, I come across of wine that I can sell three things occurred. The grapes were not properly inspected. In this case the Merlot, the blend was terrible. The acids were out of balance with the fruits.. this wine was convoluted. There was some plum and raisin notes initially, but overtaken by Savage tannins and very convoluted acids even though it’s supposed to have a certain percentage of Cabernet, I could not discern it or else the Cabernet grapes arrived, burnt or rotten. It was no surprise when I went to the Neyers website and saw that it was not even listed. I wouldn’t of listed it either, it was downright nasty. very rarely do I ever talk about poorly made wines that I had to talk about this one.

Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes Winery: Peake Ranch. Varietal: Chardonnay Area/Appellation: California, Santa Barbera County, Santa Maria Valley, Sierra Madre Vineyard Vintage: 2019. Price: $56 Jacob Liquor East Also available at their website 2020 vintage. Color: yellow, vary slight hints of green Legs: medium to fast Nose: yellow apples, peach, pears, grapefruit, mango, lemon Palate: white grapefruit, pineapple, pears, orange pomelo, mango, lemon Finish: pineapple, yellow apples, pears, more white grapefruit and pineapple, Comments: crisp, clean, distinctive, very well put together with a great symphony of yellow and orange fruits. My first Sierra Madre vineyard and damn I love this style. Pairing Suggestions: I had a charbroiled chicken salad from local Le Monde Cafe. This well work with the usual faire roast chicken, shellfish, camembert, goat cheese, white fish, pasta w/cream sauce. My wine was a little closed even after two hours, in the stem, the black raspberry Currant and Cassis along with the oak in the classic Rutherford dust was definitely there. This bottle is actually in prime condition. I gave it a good two hour decant in the stem and was very happy. My score 91 points. Tentatively if your bottles are aging well give it till about 2028.

2020 Old Soul Petite Sirah
Lodi
more
|
Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes Winery: Old Soul./ AKA Oak Ridge. Varietal: Petite Sirah. Area/Appellation: California/Lodi Vintage: 20/20. Price: $ 14 Jacob East Wichita Color: opaque purple. Legs: fast Nose: blueberries, dark plums, black pepper, anise, black licorice, Palate: blueberries, black and red plums, black licorice, Finish: Black and red plums, black pepper anise and a very small, bitter, Black cherry pit flavor on the finish. Comments: Decanted for 2 hours in a Riedel stem, plenty of backbone, tannins and acidity. As you may not be aware, Lodi, being in the north part of the central valley, was unaffected by the fires in Napa Valley. However, they were in their third year of major drought, which produced small, compact berries with VERY intense flavors. At this price point I would suggest getting several bottles and putting some away until 2026-2030. If you want to drink it now, decant it for a good 2.5-3 hours. Pairing Suggestions: This is a wine for rich, savory meals, nothing light and delicate. We are talking, venison, lamb, game, different meat stews, barbecue pork/beef with a complimentary “mild” sauce. Would also work with creamy herb chicken or Parmesan chicken. Also, Gouda cheeses and blue cheeses and I had a Truffle Parano from Dillons and it worked great. Price: $156 Lukas/KC Mo. Color: opaque dark purple with a tinge of ruby Legs: medium Nose: dark chocolate fruitcake with black raspberries and boysenberry, damson plum, star anise, truffles out the wazoo, Palate: blackberries, black, raspberries more plum, some prune, Finish: blackberries, black and red licorice, red currants, and still a presence of Oak and toast, and coffee Comments: i’m seeing that the oak toast and coffee notes seem to dominate on the finish which kind of tells me that this can still go another four or five years before seriously drinking so I have one left. I will try to save it till about 2028. Pairing Suggestions: Lasagna, Neapolitan Pizza, lamb, shoulder or shank will work cutlets will work, Comté, Duck. Lamb or game stews, bbq ribs. Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes Winery: Broadside Varietal: 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Malbec Area/Appellation: California/PasoRobles/San Juan Creek, Margarita Ranch. Vintage: 2019 Price: $15 Jacob East Wichita Color: ruby with a very slight tinge of pink on the rim Legs: slow Nose: red pomegranate, red cherry, red plum, Palate: pomegranate, red cherry, red plum, cranberry, tobacco leaf, green leaf tobacco, Finish: more pomegranate, red cherries and red plum, a slight tinge of young tobacco, AND a lot of disquieting sourness on the backside, not the good kind. The raw, over tartness of the fruit interferes with the acidity and to my palate that gets me suspecting something awry in the winemaking process. I suspect some grapes in the batch were picked too early. I also suspect that sorting was terrible or none.
Comments: decanted for nearly 3 hours in a Riedel stem and I am searching for the correct impression. Unfortunately it’s not a good one. This wine couldn’t hit the “broadside of a barn” if you dropped a 19 L bottle from 100 feet on it. If anybody else comes up with similar notes or different ones, feel free to let me know, but those are the notes I perceived. Sorry folks gotta have the bad with the good.
Pairing Suggestions: hey USDA sirloin from your local Kroger. Albertsons will probably work, I hope.

Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes Winery: Château Ducru-Beaucaillou Varietal: 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot Area/Appellation:France/Bordeaux/Saint-Julien Vintage: 2014 Price: $130/Gary’s Wine and Spirits New Jersey circa 2017 Color: dark ruby with purple Legs: very slow Nose: nice blackberries, black cherries, cassis, currant, loam, earthy, wet stone, cedar, Palate: rich luscious a real showcase of dark black fruits (blackberries , cassis, black cherries, currant) with overtones of cedar, oak, licorice coffee, vanilla. There is a whole heck of a lot going on here, very multi dimensional. Finish: rich with cedar and cassis, currant, black licorice, coffee. The finish is nice, but it’s not real lengthy but it’s still very nice. It reflects the vintage. Comments: Great example of Saint Julien and a very interesting wildcard year. Despite the threat of mildew and rot with a very warm, very humid summer, created by spring rains, an Indian summer in September really paid off and created very ripe conditions. Pairing Suggestions: goat cheese, chateaubriand, homemade pot roast, beef Wellington, etc. Score in terms of Vintage: 93 Score for the Wine: 94 Value for the Money: Highly Recommended 😍 Date Tasted: 01/14/2023 Tasted by: ACK

Comments: this is a well-made fruit, forward Pinot Noir. I get all the comments about it being like a young burgundy, or being mistaken for a young burgundy. Popped and poured. I use to sell this quite a lot back in the day. On the nose black raspberries, cassis and currant with a slight hint of oak. On the palate gobs of cassis and blackberries intermixed with clove, spices, oak and currants. The finish is nice and balanced towards the cassis and currant with subtle hints of oak and leather. Not complex but very straightforward. My favorite vintages as a retailer were the 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007.

And. Price: $27 Jacob East Wichita Kansas Color: purple almost opaque slight tinge of ruby. Legs: slow Nose: muted restrained, showing some blackberry, old wood, cassis, dried prune, bell pepper. Palate: red fruits (lingonberry, plum, pomegranate) some black cherry and dried cassis berries Finish: lingonberry, dried cassis, pomegranate, stewed cherries, noticeable wood, Lingering dried red and black fruits kind of a hodgepodge actually, no symphonic composition. Comments: My mind keeps going and telling me, “What if they have done this in 100% new French Nevers Oak for 12 months? ” I’m sure they used older oak barrels to save some money and keep the cost down but then again I think the old wood took something away from the varietal composition. Don’t get me wrong it’s a nice wine but I would have paid an extra $10 or even $15 to see what it turned out like in 100% new oak. The website clearly states it was aged for 20 months in neutral barrels. Decanted for 2.5 hours. Pairing Suggestions: I would tend to side with the more exotic and gamier flavored meats. Although it doesn’t have that Bordeaux style earth, it does possess unusual characteristics that make and favor exotic and game meats. I’m thinking duck also and pheasant.
