2001 Domaine Leroy Nuits St. Georges Aux AllotsPinot Noir more |
4/23/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 93 pointsFor me, this is what Burgundy is all about: a legendary producer, a great vintage, a piece of Village-level dirt on the Vosne end of NSG, just down-slope from the 1er crus, coming together to create a transcendent wine. Terrific, intensely floral aromas. Sweet red fruit, with a hint of Vosne-like soy sauce and savory. Just goes on and on. Wow. Finding this kind of quality at this level shouldn't be as surprising as it is, but it reminds me of a lunch with Allen Meadows in Burgundy where we drank four late 50's - early 60's Pommards from Michel Gaunoux that had been perfectly cellared since bottling and, despite the modesty of the producer and vineyard, all four were absolutely, insanely great. A subtle reminder that intense pleasure from Burgundy ain't always about trophy hunting the grand crus. |

4/22/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 91 pointsThis is exceptionally good juice. Definitely shows the characteristic purity and high acidity of the vintage, but some of the lack of complexity, as well. The abundant dark red fruit is both restrained and lively. Chiseled, but with the smoothness of age. This can be drunk with pleasure now, and has the legs to go a bit further. |

4/20/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 91 pointsSlight seepage around crack in wax cap kind of freaked me out, and first taste out of bottle seemed ok but a bit harsher than I recall this wine and perhaps a bit flawed. But after an hour of air, this really resolved. Great classic Burg aromas. Magnificent balance. Mouthfilling fruit, together with intense minerality and punchy acidity. Very dry finish -- almost metalic aftertaste -- not unpleasant but noticeable and maybe sign of an odd bottle. Had with an entrecote and bearnaise, and it was just about the perfect wine for the food. |

3/9/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 91 pointsRestrained, almost austere aromas and flavors of sour cherries, camphor, minerals and herbs. Excellent acid and balance. Great length. I slightly prefer the '05 black label, but only slightly. Really nice juice for the money and terrific with food. |

2002 Louis Jadot Pommard 1er Cru Les RugiensPinot Noir more |
2/1/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 92 pointsStill very, very young. The tannins are very present and it's a bit closed. Intense mouthfeel and crazy complex nose. I'm waiting another 5 years before I pop the next one. Great upside potential. |

1996 Domaine Dujac Clos de la RocheClos de la Roche Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
1/29/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 91 pointsMature, brick-red color. Very floral nose with some nice spice over typical secondary burg characteristics. Oak is mostly integrated, red fruit has softened but still has some sour cherry notes, and any lingering brightness is due to the significant acidity. Not spectacular, but a well-developed 15 year old Pinot. Drink now. |

2002 Copain Pinot Noir DennisonAnderson Valley more |
1/23/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 88 pointsFresher than I would have expected, with a nice complex nose for a Cali pinot. But a little hot (14% alcohol, feels like more) and showing a hint of bitterness on the finish. Nevertheless, nice to see Copain's second tier pinots holding up after almost a decade. |

1/20/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 90 pointsGreat weird wine. Very southern italian in character (deep purple, fruity, funky). Nose of raspberry, earth, maybe a little camphor. Strangely acidic given the dense fruit. Awesome with food -- cut right through a rich homemade risotto like a knife. |

2007 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin Vieille VignePinot Noir more |
1/14/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 92 pointsThe full, ripe fruit and earthy spice is well-balanced, mouth-filling, and delicious -- particulary for a village level wine. Very dark, but with a hint of red fruit and oak that gives it both freshness and sweetness. Tasted blind, I might have though this was an '05 NSG. Drinking well and great with food. |

2007 Domaine Denis Bachelet Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles VignesPinot Noir more |
1/14/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 90 pointsNice, but a bit austere, thin and acidic for a young village Gevrey. Good aromatics and really pure Pinot fruit; just a bit lacking of a "third dimension" for me. |

1/9/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 94 pointsIncredible bottle of white wine. Creamy, mouth-filling and delicious. Super long finish. Tons of complexity. Not a hint of premox. I like younger white Burgs and this is still youthful enough to be in my sweet spot while showing some age and sophistication. My dinner guests ripped through this bottle expressing consistent delight. Highly recommended. |

1/13/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 85 pointsHoped that bottle age would have resolved some of the issues with this wine, but unfortunately, it was green and mean all the way. There was a hint of a good Volnay in there, but the green character just overwhelmed the fruit and minerality, leaving behind just acid and a pronounced taste of cedar closet. Very similar in flavor profile to an undrinkable '04 Lambrays I had a year ago. Not good. |

1/1/2011 - Khamaj wrote: 93 pointsWonderful wine showing interesting secondary characteristics but still vibrant, fresh and smooth. A bit of funk and aftertaste of bitterness out of the bottle disappeared with 2.5 hrs. of air. I'm not a huge fan of young Faiveleys, but with its ample oak nicely integrated, this is a delicious, elegant Gevrey. |

1999 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux BoudotsPinot Noir more |
11/5/2010 - Khamaj wrote: 90 pointsNot generally a fan of Meo, but this was pretty good. Definitely showing signs of maturity (color, secondary characteristics), although still big and concentrated. The not insubstantial dollop of wood is still integrating but much less annoying than in younger Meo's. Tons of black fruit and earthiness. I don't find this as expressive of Boudots as Grivot or Leroy, but it's very drinkable and quite interesting. |

10/20/2010 - Khamaj wrote: 92 pointsQuintessential cote rotie: meaty, savory bullion & pepper on the nose, deep purple tobacco and dark fruit in the mouth. Actually, surprisingly modern, not in a bad way. A bit of tannin left, but integrated and drinking well. A very enjoyable syrah. Better than I expected. |

10/17/2010 - Khamaj wrote: 89 pointsA mature Nuits drinking well right now but without a lot of upside. Tons of perfume, anise and forest funk. Dense flavors and smooth tannins. Still retains some of its primary fruit, but showing nice attributes of age. |

10/14/2010 - Khamaj wrote: 87 pointsVery purple and grapey, with decent structure and concentration, a bit of minerality and a little hint of vitamin B in there. Pleasantly fruity and under-oaked. Not a revelation, but good value for the money and a good food wine. |

10/14/2010 - Khamaj wrote: 85 pointsPopped and poured. Very prominent vanilla/candy flavor out of the bottle. Not good at all -- Aussie shiraz territory. Over a couple of hours the deeper notes of dark berries and pepper came through on the nose, and the flavors flattened out a bit, but still too much vanilla for me. |

6/28/2010 - Khamaj wrote: 89 pointsPopped and poured. Should have decanted -- this really benefitted from some air. Beautiful color. Strawberry, candied cherries, maybe a hint of anise on the nose. Lots of acid. Good tannic structure. A bit thin in the mid-palette and in the finish (thanks to the acid). Great, great food wine. Steal for $28. Drinks like the best cru Beaujolais. |
