On the nose, lots of honey and apple, later changing offering a glimpse hazelnut chocolate at one point. Lots of honey initially. I could swirl and sniff this all night. Palate is a bit thinner than anticipated and slightly unbalanced but still interesting and pleasant with a mineral quality to it. I am quickly becoming a convert to this charming grape. I prefer Massa's but if you get the chance to taste this, do. |

2/11/2018 - bigpapasquid Likes this wine: 90 pointsCopperish yellow color. Day one--smells very much like the Norman cider I had recently: apple, funk, bit of balloon plastic (am I the only one?). Slowly developed floral notes as evening wore on. Day two--more floral, some subtle minty notes as well, with yesterday's funk fading. Also some citrus and spice elements. Wife says that is has "mellowed a bit." Some tannin that is growing on me. I couldn't find good information on this but believe it's an "orange" wine. Fair amount of sediment as this is unfiltered. |

2013 Alfred Merkelbach Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Spätlese #9Mosel Saar Ruwer more |
12/19/2015 - bigpapasquid Likes this wine: 92 pointsI'm reversing my earlier impression and am going to say that this is the best of Merkelbach's 2013s. It does really need some air though. Decant this sucker. Not dissimilar to the Weisser Kunstler Enkircher Ellergrub Kabinett 2014 I had the day before, but with more apple and less flinty minerality. This has a little more weight than the WK and I find the Merkelbach less gulpable. I give WK the slight nod but these both scratch that old school elegant Mosel itch. |

11/7/2015 - bigpapasquid Likes this wine: 92 pointsChocolate, butter, strawberries, apple. Refreshing and with near impeccable balance. A wine that should appeal to both the trocken and pradikatswein crowd. As I said earlier, what a steal. |

4/5/2015 - bigpapasquid Likes this wine: 93 pointsThick but not cloying, notes of rasperry and tea predominate. I prefer this to the Urgluck #8 at this stage due to the attractiveness of the fruit. |

4/1/2015 - bigpapasquid Likes this wine: 90 pointsPNP, but in retrospect would recommend a decant or that you take a small glass and save the rest for the following day. The tangy/sour aspect is a bit out of proportion on day one. Some of you freaks out there probably enjoy this! Day two and the wine is really singing, displaying better balance and clean aromatics of apple, pineapple, and citrus. Yum. |

2/12/2015 - bigpapasquid Likes this wine: 91 pointsTried side by side with the 2013 Spatlese #9. This is more approachable at this stage due to a rounder less acidic mouth feel. I gave it some time and drank both over a couple nights. The auslese began to dance a bit with spice, cream, and eventually some apricot notes emerging. I think I'll drink this young--it will age for sure, but I'm not that patient! |

3/10/2012 - bigpapasquid wrote: 94 pointsA beautiful wine with the sort of acrobatic aromatics that attract me to Alsatian whites. If I had tasted this blind I would have called it a Gewurz. It has the enticing floral and exotic fruit notes I expect from a good Gewurz. There was a vast array or aromas and at one point I nearly drove myself mad trying to pin down a certain aroma that was very pronounced yet somehow elusive. Twirl. Sniff. Twirl. Sniff. I know this from somewhere--what on earth is it? Finally I got it--Black licorice!! A first for me in a white wine. |

5/15/2009 - bigpapasquid wrote: 83 pointsI am very disappointed with this wine. Very. It got a 91 from the International wine cellar and a 91 from cellar tracker (which is where I go when I don't trust WS, RP, or Tanzer). On the nose it is actually quite interesting--a bit of butter and mineral (almost like a white burgundy), plus a bit of floral and spicy fruit notes. Yum. Once you put it in the mouth, however, the wine completely disappears. The IWC review calls it understated and clean, but I think, with all respect, that he was hoodwinked by the inviting smell. There is no flavor whatsoever. Tasted with my wife, she calls it "generic white wine flavor." I call it flavorless. It is not subtle. There is nothing there on the palate. Swirl it in your mouth and it is so light it feels like water. It has nice acidity, but that is the only positive I can think to give it taste-wise. I will be very interested to see whether future reviewers agree with me on this one. 75 points if rating on taste alone. |

4/25/2009 - bigpapasquid wrote: 91 pointsNose started off buttery, almost like over-cooked popcorn; with air, it began to take on more fruit and even a hint of spice and pepper. Nice. On the palate, it is indeed quite stoney, as others have mentioned. Very stoney, like a Chablis, but richer and with a more forgiving, mouth-watering finish. |
