Introduction

Thought it would be fun to try to do a horizontal of many of the 2009 Gramenons, with a 2001 thrown in. We bookended them with some Austrian wines for fun and even had a couple of Virginian wines thrown into the mix.

Flight 1 - Nigl and some VA wines (3 notes)

White
1999 Nigl Riesling Hochäcker Austria, Niederösterreich, Kremstal
This wine just continues to drink beautifully. Aromas of white orchard fruit and citrus, but more on the bruleed side with tons of minerality. Great steely acidity keeps this fresh and lively with a long finish dominated by a wet rock minerality. Personally, I would love to see where this goes with even more time and am going to hold on to my remaining bottles to find out.
White
2009 King Family Vineyards Viognier King Family USA, Virginia, Central Virginia, Monticello
Pretty aromas of pear, melon and white flowers. However, quite flabby on the palate and seriously lacking acid and structure. Admittedly, I was informed the wine was opened for a few hours prior to my tasting, so perhaps I can't fully appreciate what the wine may have had to offer.
White
2008 Linden Chardonnay Hardscrabble USA, Virginia, Northern Virginia
Aromas of lemon, tropical fruit, cream and toasted spice. On the palate, primarily more pineapple with spice with a roundness on the mouth. There is a polished feel to the wine -- one can sense that there is good winemaking here, but there isn't quite the acidity to give it lift. Supposedly there was some botrytis in this vintage, and it really doesn't seem to manifest itself other than in the spice nuance, which admittedly, seemed to attributable to the oak.

Flight 2 - The Gramenons (6 notes)

White
2009 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône La Vie On Y Est France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
This definitely showed the ripeness of the vintage with ripe peach, red apple skins, white flowers, ginger and spice on the nose. Mid-full bodied on the palate, a little bit top-heavy and could use a little more acid to balance all the richness (again likely indicative of the vintage), with a peach cobbler flavor on the palate (amazingly so, as you could sense the baked peach, spice and even the dough). Finishes with a touch of heat. A beautiful and perfumed Viognier, but again I would've liked some more acid and to that end, I would recommend drinking sooner than later.
Red
2009 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône Poignee de Raisins France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Ahhh Gramenon! High-toned red fruit (strawberries and raspberries) jump out at you with notes of baking spice and anise. Amazingly juicy and fresh and lively in the palate with ripe but not jammy red fruit. This is a wonderful younger vine Grenache.
Red
2009 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône Sierra du Sud France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
Unsurprisingly, darker than the Poignee de Raisins. But darker in fruit as well as this is more in the realm of black fruit, but still with some red fruit notes with a meaty savory quality and a touch of violets. Tighter and more tannic that the Poignee de Raisins and ripe black fruit and coffee with balanced acidity. Optimally, it would probably be better to hold this for maybe a year, but with the minimal amount of sulfur, it's probably a safer bet to decant.
Red
2009 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône Villages Les Laurentides France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages
A blend of Grenache and Syrah coming from 50 year old vines. It is the only Gramenon that we tasted that appends the "Village" to its AOC, so I am assuming this comes from somewhere different than where the other vines are located. The older vines show the extra concentration with both red and black fruit and touches of black pepper and baking spices. Silky and smooth on the palate, this had the most polished feel out of all the wines we tasted and to this point the most minerality, with good intensity and juicy acidity. Very good length.
Red
2009 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône La Sagesse France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
The La Sagesse is 100% Grenache coming from 60 year old vines. When it was first opened, this had a strong whiff of brett, but with a little bit of air, it settled down. Dominated by fresh and ripe raspberries, strawberries and cherries with notes of baking spices and minerals. Clearly the most concentrated wine of the Gramenons we tasted (albeit we did not taste the Ceps Centenaires) yet also very balanced. Round and smooth in the mouth with beautiful ripe red fruit and plenty of lively acid and a long finish.
Red
2001 Domaine Gramenon Côtes du Rhône La Sagesse France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône
After tasting a beautiful 2009 La Sagesse, we tasted the nearly 10 year old 2001. Admittedly, this wine seemed to be past its prime. It still had plenty of fruit, but in the realm of dried fruit, strawberries and cherries. Not that this is a bad thing. It just showed its age on the palate where the acid wasn't as lively as one would've hoped for. It was soft and nuanced in the mouth, showing a notes of cigar box, baking spices and leather. Unsure of the provenance on this and admittedly a 10 year old wine with a very low sulfur regimen is risky.

Flight 3 - A sweet finish (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Weingut Rosenhof Welschriesling Trockenbeerenauslese Austria, Burgenland, Neusiedlersee
Aromas of apricots, tropical fruit and some baking spice. Rich and big on the palate with very good concentration, and perhaps a touch top heavy as there could have been just a little more acid to help keep it lively through its long finish. Overall, not bad for the price.

Closing

Overall, a great tasting with fun wines and good company. What more can you ask for?
