Introduction

The group gathered at Irene's for a French themed dinner. The food was spectacular, Irene's dessert was a show-stopper. The wines were nice.

Flight 1 (5 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Baudot Pere et Fils Champagne Grand Cru Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
88 points
Mineral driven champagne with a tinny palate and a somewhat bitter finish.
Rosé - Sparkling
2011 Louis Roederer Champagne Vintage Brut Rosé France, Champagne
92 points
Drank a small glass over 15 minutes. I was impressed with this champagne. There is almost-ripe strawberry and good minerality.

White
2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Bougros Côte Bouguerots France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Drank a small glass over 20 minutes. The mouth-feel is rich. The fruit is more discreet. There is intense minerality, a lot of salinity and good acid.
White
2011 Chartron et Trébuchet Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
90 points
Drank a small glass over 15 minutes, and drank a good sized glass the next day. Overall, this only has some minerality that would suggest Burgundy, but it is a nice chardonnay. I would not guess Meursault. There is lemon, oak, some creme brulee and minerals.
White
2016 Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
89 points
There is a lot to like about this CDP white. To me, I can appreciate aspects of it, and the whole package is somewhat challenging.

Flight 2 (8 notes)

Red
2002 Camus Pere & Fils Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
92 points
Consistent with previous note, and sadly this hasn't really improved since 3 years ago.
Red
2004 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru
87 points
There is some light red fruit that is overwhelmed by puckery tannins.
Red
2008 Domaine Louis Boillot et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Chapelle France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
90 points
There is good elegance, red cherry, acidity, and it is lean. This is Burgundian.
Red
2002 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
92 points
This wine has softened since the last time I had it 6 years ago, but it has not declined (or improved to any noticeable measure). Instead, it's more Burgundian and nuanced.
Red
2016 Saint Cosme Crozes-Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
87 points
4 hour decant likely helped this wine, but it's still not ready. This tasted primary and grapey.
Red
2000 Château Grand-Pontet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
This has an impressive funky Bordeaux nose. The palate is acceptable, somewhat tart.
Red
2000 Château Pontet-Canet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
93 points
6 hour decant. This was impressive, and not completely ready yet. Rich fruit and tobacco, meaty, and great texture. Try in 2024.

Red
2006 Château Le Gay Pomerol France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
92 points
Decanted 2 hours, this is impressive for the vintage. Pencil lead, tobacco, earth and dark red fruit.

Flight 3 (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2007 Château Rabaud-Promis France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Drinking well right now. Great balance, spice, sweetness and acidity match well.
