Secondary aromas dominate the nose with earthiness, old wood varnish, underbrush, dust, iron wrapped around dark cherries, raspberries, old leather, licorice, smoked bacon, herbs, and exotic spices. A light bodied wine packed with flavor showing sour cherries, raspberries on entry, the midpalate reveals dark chocolate, licorice, and mouth searing acidity. The finish is of moderate length with woody flavors, herbs, black pepper, and chewy tannins. This wine is at its peak, the fruit is starting to fade, drink up soon!

Musty feral aromas at first that dissipate quickly revealing blackberries, kirsch, garrigue, lavender, licorice, black olives, roasted coffee, and black pepper. Delicious on the palate with sweet dark fruit flavors on entry, a reserved midpalate which reveals dark cherries, dark chocolate, licorice, and roasted coffee. The flavors remain seamlessly on the palate to the end where notes of roasted meats, black pepper, coarse rustic tannin's emerge. Very old world in style, quite earthy and slight brett, but still filled with delicious fruit.

On the eye this opaque wine exhibits a dark core with a fading brick color on the edges. Aged aromas on the nose revealing plums, blackberries, cherries, old leather, roasted game, sandalwood, tobacco, undergrowth, and black pepper. Nice silky texture on the palate with sour red fruit flavors on the attack, the midpalate is filled with intense acidity, licorice, espresso, and dark chocolate. The finish is of long length on this mid bodied wine, however it is quite coarse and monolithic. It shows green stemmy flavors, black pepper, small hints of creamy vanilla, and very rough tannins. This seems to have a traditional Rioja character, where the harsh acidity marks the backbone and fruit flavors take a secondary role. Very complex tertiary aromas, more Burgundian in character, but the flavors are fully Castilian. This seems to be in its last gasp of life, drink up sooner than later.

A nice golden color with aromatic complexity showing oxidized green apples, honeysuckle, orange peel, floral notes, salinity, crushed volcanic stones, and spices. Great texture on this full bodied white showing green apples and apricots on entry, the midpalate shows honey, citric notes that lead to a long saline yet spicy mineral finish. There is an amazing balance to this wine, everything seems to be where it should, but the most impressive feature is play between sweet white fruit flavors and saline notes. The complexity on this is mind boggling, crisp clean cut flavors that just remain for a long time, seems to be a mix between a Manzanilla and Mosel Riesling.

The back label states this should be “vigorously decanted” so I decided to open this 48+ hours before for some slow oxygenation. On the eye this is a clear wine with a dark orange to brown color. The nose has some oxidative notes similar to sherry, roasted nuts, orange marmalade, candied ginger, white flowers, honey, hints of petrol, and crushed stones. Very complex flavors on the palate with some oxidized green apples, pulverized walnuts, dried apricots, orange marmalade, lychees on entry, leading to a refreshing acidic midpalate filled with citrus peel, black tea, baking spices, candied ginger, brown sugar that continues seamlessly on to the long lasting mineral finish. This wine has an extremely exotic nose, although a bit shy due to its youth, its filled with lavender, tar, smoke, incense, ground coffee, cedar, dark cherries, and on the end blueberries & blackberries melted down into a jam and mixed with cream. The wine also appears to be a bit viscous on the eye, with a great dark core and a vibrant youthful purple on the rim.

On the palate the wine enters with a juicy dark fruit flavor, then immediately there’s a bridge that leads toward the mid-palate effortlessly. The wine bursts with blueberry flavors intermixed with sour cherries, and small hints of dark chocolate. The finish is dominated by opulent vanilla cream flavor which makes the wine a bit sweet until slight woody flavors with a dab of unripe green fruit appear. Alas, balance is kept.

This wine has a few flaws, 2007 was a difficult year in the region; however the wine is quite complex and thought provoking. The flavor is a bit light on the end, and its missing some body. However, besides flavors the texture is very delicate and silky with very polite and polished tannins.
