Coravined over 2 months and opened the bottle for the two last glasses.

When tasted with coravin, I found it rather simple. But the two last glasses were very enjoyable when I opened the bottle, on the sour cherry, pepper, and forest floor. A good acidity makes it well alive. Tannins are well integrated and the mouth feels very smooth and elegant. Not over-complex but an interesting barrel-aged wine. I would say it lies on the higher bound of the price range I would pay for it (CHF 30).

As a separated note, I always find the wines giving much more when we open the bottle. I have the impression that the coravin is neutralising the wine, which does not impact too much when the wine is young but it is a disadvantage when the wine is already aged. It would be great whe other members would give their experience on coravin!

11/26/23, 11:07 AM - Many thanks for your comment, which helped me seeing that I wrongly set the grade to 99 instead of 90... For me, it is a 90, not more. Maybe with time, it could improve

  • VinceRime commented:

12/4/23, 10:44 PM - Hi bobbylion, thank you for your comment. Yes it would be great to hear your feedback on it soon. Somehow, I compare it to wine that has just been bottled, so muted aroma due to the intense shaking it has passed through. Nevertheless, 10-year old wines are the threshold for me to use coravin. For older wines, I do not dare to use it as I'm afraid it would break it.

  • VinceRime commented:

3/10/24, 3:01 PM - Hi bobbylion Tha K you for your interesting feedback. Should we assume that that Coravin did not impact on more structured wine? Which would make sense, as they need more time to become more rounded. Did you notice any change in the glass?

92-93 pts

A lot has been said about this wine, Neal Martin and William Kelley certainly questioned this wine. Tasting blind this is far from a Paulliac, and honestly a Bordeaux, maybe a Californian Syrah, Napa Cab or Rhone varietal. Certainly a little messy, not a bad wine just very far from a 99-100 point wine which certain critics have stated. There is certainly no terroir aspects to this wine. Nil.

Notes of dark spicy cherry, bruised plum, kirsch, cassis and currents, along with spice, dark bitter chocolate, nutmeg and bay leaves. The palate shows some sort of Syrah style current, fresh herbs, Christmas cake spices , melting tannins, yet the mid-palate struggles to properly fill out leading a medium style of finish. This wine just feels a little messy for the quality. To repeat the wine is fine, I just don't think this is a true representation of the estate.

12/2/23, 1:29 PM - Very nice to read all yout comments, but they make me so frustrated! I'm currently on my 30's and the first vintage that I have bought is 2005 when I was 20yo. So my palate of Bordeaux has been kind of formed with these new world Bordeaux.
However, with time, I notice that I much prefer the aged classic old school Bordeaux. I could put my hand on Larcis Ducasse 88/90 and ducru 85, but very difficult to get aged Bordeaux. Do you have recommandations for estates that keep producing classic Bordeaux in recent vintages? Many thanks.

  • VinceRime commented:

12/3/23, 2:17 PM - Thank you for your usefull comments. Til now I have got a cellar ca. 900 bottles with good cellar conditions. I have collected Bordeaux of the 2016 (a lot), some 2018, some 2019, and some 2020. Estates like leoville Barton, Montrose Pichon comtesse, Pichon baron, brane cantenac, chavalier, Beauséjour Bécot, Lagrange, Sociando Mallet, etc. Anyway, it is always interesting to see the point of view of People on Chavalier, for instance, as some consider it as converging to modern style. Also, not sure about the value of first growth Bordeaux (even I am much looking forward to afford Lafite). I'm from the generation that always saw them at 500+ bucks, interest went to other price value region like Loire, Beaujolais, Piemonte.

Too sweet and sticky for me, although after 2 days it seemed to balance out a bit. It tastes of sweet apple cider and looks nearly like "big city" tap water.
The high scores from RP and so many others are baffling and total BS. I appreciate Riesling wines but never with so much sugar! For $50, I'd say this has a terrible quality-to-price ratio. IMHO, it's worth less than half that amount; perhaps $20. Serve it only slightly chilled, otherwise the fruit disappears, then it tastes like Gatorade.
  • VinceRime commented:

9/8/23, 10:11 PM - Additionally, Spätlese are made to cellar in the long term. In their youth, sugar might be overwhelming as you mentioned. However, with time, sugar decreases, and aromas and finesse develop. I did not plan top open my JJ Prüm Spätlese before their 20th birthday. German Rieslings have in general exceptional cellaring capability.

94/95. Profound. Has lovely aromas of blueberries, blackberries, leather, sandstone, mint and clove hints. The best silky Tondonia ever. Its layered medium bodied palate has a taffetas texture, impressive depth and lightly cloved blue, black and red fruits and great freshly fruited length . I have ordered half a case. 13%.This is my Château Petrus. Can be drunk with pleasure PnP but improves with 7-8 hrs aeration with the blue fruits coming out. Improves on day 2. Lay down 10-25 years easily. This Pinotes a little.

  • VinceRime commented:

  • VinceRime commented:

7/29/23, 1:22 PM - Ok got it, thank you for this info. It is my first experience with this winemaker, got some Tondonia 2010 and Bosconia 2011. Will try them soon! Cheers!

Stunning wine with the fattiness of Semillion in a sunny vintage. Sill very young, it does not get the complexity from tertiary aromas yet. To forget 10-15 years
  • VinceRime commented:

1/3/23, 12:58 PM - Thank you for your thoughts! Actually, 2009 is quite dense, so I am not afraid of lying it 10 more years. But it is my first experience with Coutet, so happy to hear that the Coutet wines can age well. Which vintage did you already try?

On day 2: there is touch of maderisation, but the palate has deepened out. What great depth of dark flavour! What vertical integrity! Time to buy more, but perhaps not from this vintage.
  • VinceRime commented:

11/6/22, 5:14 AM - Hi Vide, thank you for your comment. How did you keep the bottle overnight? Last time I opened this bottle (in 2019), we were disappointed after a decant of 4-5 hours. Would you be recommend a slow ox of 24h? Thanks.

This wine is phenomenal. Drank with a 2000 Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon and 2013 Bionic Frog and it was the WOTN. Unbelievable nose of black and red fruit, earth and graphite. So fresh on the palate and finish with added elements of pepper and smoke. Everyone picked it as their favorite, and it stood up to something as big as the Bionic Frog. UU4

Glorious aromas of crisp black cherry, smoke, potpourri spice and musk. Ripe but cool and crisp black cherry has serious Grand Cru concentration. Silky structure is more refined than you might expect in Pommard. Seamless and delicious. At peak, and should hold for a decade+

Deep garnet in hue, the wine shoots from glass with tobacco leaf, currants, spice box, cigar wrapper, blackberry and cassis. Elegant, fresh and vibrant, the wine is silky, long and precise. There is a cool spicy note that rides along with all the layers of soft, polished fruits on the mid-palate and in the finish. This is a refined vintage for COS. You find lower alcohol and the wine feels more energetic on the palate and in the finish, even though the pH is high at 3.9. Let it sleep for at least a decade before popping a cork. Produced from a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Merlot, 13.46 % ABV, the harvest took place September 10 to September 24. 97-99
  • VinceRime commented:

5/25/21, 10:13 PM - Dear Jeff, thank you for your helpful reviews. You rated Cos d'Estournel with a grade of 98 on the 2018 and 2020 vintages, but both are seems to be very different in their profile. Which one would you recommend to buy, if you would have to choose? Does you still think that the 2018 is the best vintage ever produced? Thank you in advance and best regards, Vincent

  • VinceRime commented:

5/30/21, 11:33 AM - Thank you so much for your answer. Indeed, I have misread your comment about the 2018. Great to know that 2016 was one of the best vintages overall.

I defaulted to PNP for this wine given poor experiences with decanting (shuts down on me). Not bad after warming up, with dark ripe fruit and ripe chewy tannin. Not as complete and complex as I was hoping it would become when I tasted it on release, but shows it's fruit better this way than my experiences with decanting it to date. B+/A-?

A 91, at best. Disappointing. This wine has still not evolved to what it should be. One-dimensional with not a lot of fruit or depth. I hope it comes around. I made a note to not try it again until 2022. I sense that others are having a similar experience because the auction price for this wine has not performed along with other Bordeaux wines I own with similar vintages and price ranges.
  • VinceRime commented:

12/24/20, 12:06 AM - I exactly share your feeling, disapointed. Actually, I own a couple of Bordeaux 2006 (Montrose, Figeac, Leoville Barton, Canon) but I never enjoyed them. When young, I found them to extracted. And now, when the tannins are integrated, I find them rather one-dimensional, almost not interesting. I have still left one Montrose, one Canon and one Figeac, so I decided to keep them another 15 years until their 30th anniversary to see if something happens.

As great as it was last year. Chocolatey blackberry and earthy, spicebox notes make for a sultry St. Emilion; drinking this puppy early is all too easy. Drink now or hold for a few years to shed some of the wood treatment. Love this wine.
  • VinceRime commented:

10/31/20, 5:15 AM - I am more a traditionalist, so I prefer it after a 24h decant. The first day, it tasted too much the strawberry yogourt in my opinion.

Deep and shiny in color, tobacco leaf, cedar wood, pencil shavings and dark fruits appear with no effort at all. Full bodied, lively, vibrant and juicy fruits, this wine is long and intrepid with a strong tannic backbone. The tannins are perfectly polished and there is an established purity of fruit and a structure to age for decades. Like all the top vintages of Montrose, you will need to allow it time in the cellar, at least 10 to15 years, which in the world of Montrose is almost forward. The wine was made from blending 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Montrose, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, reaching 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.65. The Grand Vin was made from 37% of the harvest, which took place September 12 to September 29.
