Whoa nelly, this wine is absolutely outstanding for the vintage. Wonderful nose showing funky earth, dark fruit and spices. The palate has absolutely wonderful mouthfeel and flavor intensity and yet feels nearly weightless on the palate. Dark red fruit, grapefruit, clay and gravel show on the palate. Already balanced, already integrated, this is drinking fantastic now but has what I think is a very bright future. The best 2011 OPN I have tried so far, this is really, really good. 93+

This is a massively sweet wine. Powerful flavors showing even chilled down to refrigerator temp. Carries a wonderful bouquet of fresh oranges, melons, ripe sweet and sour apples, tangerine, peaches and other stone fruit. There is such weight and persistence here and it lingers for quite a while, it's easy to find many different flavors in the mouth. I like the progression of fresh, sour fruit into ripe sweet fruit as the wine lingers and finishes. As I said earlier, this is massively sweet, and letting it creep up to room temp yesterday, it was almost going unbalanced. Serve chilled, but I would not recommend drinking this anytime soon, rather bury your bottles for a later date. If you do drink this now, drink it as a dessert wine at the end of the night. 92++ EDIT: To speak to Levenberg's note, the acidity is barely in balance here, when chilled. As it warms, it definitely seems overly sweet for the amount of acidity it carries.

This wine changed considerably with time in glass, initially it was showing lots of earth and mushroom on the nose, over time the nose is all tart cherries and roses with a musty, loamy note. In the mouth it is lighter bodied, showing young cherries with an dark earthy note under the fruit flavors. The fruit turns tart and lightly sour as the wine finishes. Once the fruit flavors relax, there is a light earthy, mushroom note. The acid is fine and pairs nicely with the fruit flavors, tannins are present but not aggressive. Overall a nice wine, showing a bit closed tonight in my opinion. It shows good complexity and nuance, perhaps more time in bottle will relax the tart, near sour edge the fruit currently shows.

I don't know where to go with a score on this still as I feel this is still super tight. There is some great things going on in the nose, a bit of cherry pie and crust, dried fig, mushroom, damp earth. Smells pretty good. Those flavors play out initially, some nice rich fruit and earthy flavors but the structure is still pretty strong on this. I know there is more here but it's a bit over acidic and tannic in the finish. I've got 2 more bottles, I'd give these a lot of time (2-3 years at least?) based on this. I'll re-try this tomorrow, for now I'd place it around 87-88 points.

Huge nose on this, dark cherry, blackberry, vanilla, menthol, rosemary dark chocolate. Very powerful aromas. Medium weighted, flavors of chocolate covered red fruit, dry earth, dark chocolate, tobacco. The high abv% shows in the mid-palate, overtaking the flavors for a small amount of time. The finish is long, dark fruits with a dark chocolate edge. Delicious wine overall, well-made and balanced, just a bit hot.

Open 24 hours: Smells like dark cherries and plums crushed onto hot, fresh asphalt. Really quite smooth and easy to drink today, I remember the structure being a bit overpowering yesterday. Dark fruit flavors show initially leading into bright acids on the finish. Nice body and persistence, as I take more sips the tannins build and build. Less stones and tar than I got on the nose, the fruit is easily the initial flavor currently. Overall a really nice wine. Drinking better a day later than as a PnP, so if you plan on drinking it soon I would suggest decanting it.

Smells distinctly Oregon but shows brighter cherry components on the nose and a bit of burnt wood. The palate shows bright cherry and raspberry fruit. Pretty intense for a 2011, which pairs nicely with the stronger acidity and tannic structure this wine carries. As the structure relaxes in the finish there is a touch of sweet red fruit left over which is quite nice. This is one I would age.

Nice nose, low intensity red fruit, soft and slightly rich. Also a bit of spice, possibly oak. The mouth feel is light, some bright and baked cherry fruit and toasted oak. The entry into the finish is pretty tart, showing a bit of citrus zest in the finish with an almost bitter edge. Some red fruit does outlast this but is faint. Like my 2007's from Elk Cove, I'll sit on these a few years and cross my fingers. The 2007's came around, and these should too. 85+

Doesn't smell very good. Cranberries, pie cherries. Smells ripe. On the palate, dried cherries and cranberry, red tea. Structurally still holding well, however the acid is a bit strong. Blind I'd probably call this a 2009 which is weird because it's 13.2% on the label, but still tastes ripe and somewhat alcoholic, or perhaps the acid is making me think it's more alcoholic than it is. Overall, it's ok. Maybe I'm being too critical. This wine was quite good on release and each bottle I've opened has been really underwhelming as I've been aging it.

Day 1, this was tart, thin, and really, really austere. High acid. Tart fruit. Day 2, developed a bit more cherry flavor, spice. Enjoyable but not great. Day 3, terrible. Only tart fruited, high acid, blah. Day 4, down the drain. Really weird bottle of wine.

Open 3 hours, enjoyed with pizza: Little to no bricking. Smells really good, cocoa, dried cherry, dried herbs, tobacco, gravel and the faintest hint of graphite, all integrated and somehow creamy. Awesome. Texturally this is really nice, medium bodied with balanced acidity and very mellow but present tannin that dry the gums very late. The flavors on the palate stick to black cherry and dried cranberry. The herbal thing from the nose is present but light, also some sweet pipe tobacco and rich earth in the mid-palate and finish. Doesn't finish short, but isn't long either, and ends cleanly and balanced. This is a really good wine that is drinking great now, showing some youth and a bit of age. No rush on this, I'd say, but if you have some in your cellar, but totally worth checking in a bottle if you have multiples.

Open 2 hours: the strong herbal notes I mentioned in my previous note are still present however the fruit has darkened up, showing some old fig, dark cherries, chocolate and black licorice on the nose. Smells rich and delicious. Medium-to-light texture, the strong acidity previously mentioned is still a big part of this wine, showing from start to finish. However it plays nice with the fruit flavors here who show more richness than previously mentioned but still show youthful cherry and cranberry flavors, maybe just a hint of young plum fruit as well. The tannins remind me of really bitter chocolate and stoniness, it's no where near as rich on the palate as it is on the nose. The tannins show good polish but are still grippy and are nicely balanced. Still powerfully acidic though, but just as before, just inside what I consider acceptable, and the wine makes no missteps despite it. Killer juice, I enjoyed this with a huge New York steak covered in truffle salt and this was a perfect compliment to it. 92+

Crazy nose on this one, dark fruits and raw beef with blood, earth and strong herbal component and faint high cocoa chocolate. Smells killer. This is a lighter, more elegant expression of Syrah on the palate, the dark fruit shows initially but lends toward young red fruit and cranberry leading into the finish. Some great herbal notes show up, and this leans back toward the dark fruits in the finish. Shows wonderful texture and the acidity rises up strong in the finish. This is right on the upper limit for acidity in wine, combined with the intensity of the wine this shows really well now. This make two Willamette Valley Syrah wines I've had now, and this is a huge eye-opener as to what is possible for WV Syrah. This is crazy good.

Reserved nose of dried cranberry, wet clay and something floral, edging toward roses. The nose is more interesting than immediately delicious. I'm going to agree with a previous user's comment that this is surprisingly easy on tannins for a Le Puits Sec, I would say this is drinking good now. Dark cherries lead into some cranberries and a strong herbal note as the wine is swallowed. The tannins pick up intensity the more you sip the wine, however they have a nice texture and don't overwhelm the mouth. This shows nicely balanced acidity. Overall not what I expected, perhaps a bit "boring" for a Le Puits Sec, this seems rather lazy compared to the nervous, somewhat energetic nature I expect from this wine.

Tasted in a 2001-2011 vertical: Moving to this from the 2005, this was surprisingly youthful on the nose. Young strawberries, earthy funk, and red vine candy. The palate shows really fruity, almost like Hawaiian Punch meets cherry juice. The structure is somewhat tight on the finish and overall the wine comes off a little austere. Perhaps this needed decanted.

Just opened two bottles, both were absolutely amazing. Both had wet corks, one had leaked. Very clear and pale in glass, the color is intact with just the faintest hint of bricked edges. The first bottle, as a PnP, very pretty wine, delicate, no edges. Silk. Unfortunately we consumed the entire thing before it even got to room temperature. The next bottle was opened 4-5 hours before I consumed it. Stunning nose of red berries, earth, tobacco. Slightly savory, smelled freaking delicious. Similar flavors on the palate, but what is so striking about this wine is the integration and mouthfeel. Silky smooth texture. Perfect integration of structural elements, the acid here is so soft yet has great intensity. Perfect balance in that regard. The tannins are nearly fully resolved, on multiple sips you get the faintest hint of a grip in the gums but even so, its so gentle. Long finish. This wine is really, really, really good. Two bottles, both were stunning. If you have a bottle of this, check in on it. I bought mine on release, and they've spent their life in proper cellaring conditions. That the corks were completely wet was worrying. That said, drink up, because this wine is entering it's peak, in my opinion. This was one of the best Oregon Pinots I've tasted in recent memory, definitely my wine of the year so far. I would score it in the high 90's if I was still doing the scoring thing. For my palate, wine does not get much better than this. I opened this blind for a friend and he thought it was a 2007 from Dundee Hills.

Tasted in 2001-2011 vertical: I can say what was one of my favorite wines early in my wine hobby has fallen out of favor with me. Perhaps it was other great wines in this line-up, but the imperfections of this wine really stuck out this time. The nose was really dark, showing almost port-ish dark fig, prune and old blackberry fruit. Rich palate initially, jammy blackberry fruit, good earthy terroir in the mid-palate but the high alcohol of this wine overtakes the finish, showing a lot of boozy heat which closes off the finish and wrecks any sense of balance. Sad. I'd be interested to have this wine alone some night as these sort of tastings really make obvious the good and bad qualities of wines, but today this wasn't doing well. My least favorite of the vertical, also my last bottle of nearly 4 cases of this wine I had purchased and consumed over the years.

Open 3 hours: This shows a lot of herbal notes on the nose, anise, clove, parsley, black pepper, menthol. The fruit isn't as easy to describe, perhaps plums or old, dry blueberries. It tastes lightly like blueberries, plums and young blackberries. The pepper on the nose shows very lightly on the palate. Ends with a big burst of acidity and tart fruit, and is lightly tannic in the finish. This is an interesting bottle of wine, perhaps would be better with food than on it's own. This states only 11.5% abv on the bottle but doesn't come across as light or austere. Overall a really cool bottle of wine worth checking out if you are interested in WV Syrah.

Smells really good, white pears, green grapes, lemon creme, toast, acid. I really like the smell of toasted wood on the nose, it's very light and under the other aromas but present. The winemaker used very little new oak on this so I wonder if that aroma is just a figment of my imagination, it doesn't feel so. Good flavor intensity on the palate, pears, apples, a touch of richness from the malo, nicely balanced acid as the wine finishes. Good length in the finish, ripe apple, citrus and stone fruit flavors linger far into the finish. This is the first wine from this winemaker and it's a damn good first effort. On the pricy side at $50 but worth it if you're serious about good Oregon Chardonnay.

Open 1 hour: I like the nose a lot, smells of pie cherries, plum, raisin, chocolate, rosemary. Slightly reduced smelling. The fruit and other flavors are evenly distributed on the palate, neither showing more forward than the other. Cherry and dried cranberries, dry soil, tobacco, pencil wood with light graphite, coming off more stony/gravel minerality in the finish. A touch of alcohol warmth on the finish provides a bitter component, reminding me of something herbal. On it's own, it tastes herbal. With food, it's obviously alcohol. Either way, enjoyable. The fruit has really backed off from last time I had this, the secondary flavors are more in the forefront now. Balanced acidity, the tannin is still has a lot of grip, it's neither rough or soft, it's somewhere in between. I like this, it's complex at this price point and enjoyable both on it's own or with food.

PnP'd at cellar temp, consumed over a few hours. I didn't keep notes, but was amazed at how the wine kept changing as the time went on. Amazingly youthful for a 25-year-old wine. Wonderful texture to the tannins. Overall a wonderful and delicious wine. Poured side-by-side with a 1991 Latour, everyone at the table agreed this was the better of the two wines that night.

Open 24 hours: Smells freaking rad. Smells like strawberries dusted in powdered sugar initially, searching deeper there is some darker fruit, old blackberries, a bit of raisin, gravel road and grape stems. The palate is ripe cherries with less ripe strawberry and cranberry, with the flavors getting a bit darker as the wine finishes. Medium texture with slightly over-medium acidity and late, fine grained tannins. Overall, really nice wine and a killer value. I'm liking the sweet fruit on both nose and palate, great expression of ripe fruit. Don't know how it will age but it seems in a good place today, I would say there is no rush.

Rich red fruit nose with cedar, cigar box, strawberry ice cream, and cocoa. Big body, quite heavy on the palate, not particularly reminding me of Sangiovese. The palate shows plums, dark red fruit, pomegranate, wet tobacco, dark chocolate, dry wood and rocks. Some tart fruit and drying tannins cling to the tongue in the finish. This is a very modern style for Sangiovese, lots of extract and weight and flavors that I can easily say I would not pick this out as Sangio in a blind line-up.

The palate shows similar red tea, floral, bright red fruit and a light evergreen herbal, almost menthol component. Juicy texture and really nice structure, firm tannins and bright well integrated acidity. Overall a very complex wine. Smells wonderful, apples, limes, melon, oak and salt. The palate has lighter body with nice intensity, there is a sense of richness to the initial fruit on the palate. As the wine transitions into the finish, a spike of acid and lees-y tartness and texture can be felt, almost providing a tannic feel. The flavor lasts long into the finish and the acid really coats the mouth, settling into the cheeks and gums firmly. As I take more sips, the acid is a bit much and begs for some cheese or other rich food. Nicely integrated already although I would say the acid could use a year in bottle to integrate better and maybe mellow out a bit, hopefully. Overall a wonderful bottle of wine, really complex, and absolutely killer at $24 a bottle.

User "MKMAST" nailed it, this has a boat-load of acidity that would lend to a dish like Pad Thai. For me, the flavors mimic a fresh granny smith apple, with a large amount of mid-palate and finish acids. The RS really helps integrate the acidity, and although the acidity is huge, the flavor intensity and RS help from keeping it from being overwhelming. For you acid lovers, this is one to check out. One, it's delicious and shows Oregon terroir for Riesling, and two, it's got absolutely screaming acidity. Great wine at this price point.

(Open 2 hours, 2nd glass): This is in a nice place tonight, smells like a bag of dried cranberries, young cherries and a hint of red tea. Smells really good, there is just a hint of richness too in the nose that is great. The palate is youthful red fruit, young cherry, under-ripe but red strawberries, pomegranate and cranberry. Bright, juicy acidity spikes up in the finish and shows good balance to the intensity of the fruit flavors. The tannins are subtle but present, showing just a bit of grip to the gums and cheeks with intensity below that of the fruit and acids. The finish is nice, the fruit that shows a bit of a tart edge initially shows a bit of richness after the acids relax with red tea and fruit. This bottle is showing a bit more weight than the last bottle, I know this is 11% abv but it's showing a bit more substance tonight. Killer juice.

Killer nose, ripe currant, straight-forward cabernet fruit, sweet tobacco. On the palate this is classic California cabernet with soft edges, good complexity and relaxed but present structure. We tasted this wine next to an '05 Quilceda Creek and that made me realize why I liked this wine so much in the past, this wine is very well balanced, not overly intense and provides you a long time to revel in the experience without blasting you with alcohol or structure. This is really good, classic-ly styled cabernet. Super delicious. I wish I had more.

Acidity is in a good place and the tannins are very gentle, almost to the point of being non-existent. Powerful nose, cherry pie and crust, toffee. The palate is also quite forward and powerful but also complex, big, sweet cherry flavors with some other red berry fruit, milk chocolate, english toffee, coffee and vanilla. Medium-heavy weight on the palate with good acidity and tannin. There is a bit of hollowness in the transition to the finish. Somewhere that's where I lose flavor if the wine has a lot of alcohol, but this doesn't seem to be very high in ABV. Tasted this side-by-side with a Lachini 'S' Lachini vinyards wine and the two wines were amazingly different in style. Still a fun wine, but honestly not something I would purchase again.

This has improved from last time I tasted it. Still dark fruited with light characters of stoney-clay mineral and old herbs. Consumed over 3 days. As a PnP this was a little rough around the edges. Day 2 was when it was it's best, soft edges, good integration and length. The tannins are still very grippy with good acid. Overall a fairly simple, easy drinking Bordeaux, pretty killer at this price point. I have no idea if it will improve but it is drinking nicely now with some air.

Really subtle nose showing earth and fruit aromas in balance, dried roses, red tea, dried wood, loamy earth along with dark fruit and raspberry fruit. Subtle in that it's not jumping out of the glass, but it has a lot to say, good complexity. Really nice texture right on entry, a medley of blackberries and raspberries along with red tea, stems and dark earth. The acidity and tannin are really well balanced and integrated currently. Medium to light intensity all around. Long finish with lingering acidity, refined tannin and red berry fruit. Overall this is a really good wine. The texture here is really nice and overall integration is great. It's complex. Not an intense wine in any degree, this one speaks to you softly. Pop and pour: After some vigorous swirling for a few minutes the nose shows gentle red fruits with a light sweetness to them and some dry soil. Smells quite nice. The palate starts off very light initially. The fruit on the start to the mid-palate is almost non-existent, showing a very low intensity. My thinking is that this wine needed a decant because the rest of the wine is really good. In the mid-palate shows awesome zippy red citrus acidity and flavor, and tart red berry fruit arises in the finish, holding some intensity once the structure releases. The tannin here has a really nice feel to it and is matched well to the acidity. These things give me hope for this wine. Where as in 2007 the wines were tough on release, this wine is not tough at all, rather the fruit is just really dialed back for a Elk Cove wine. If you are going to drink this wine now give it a decant, but I'd say a year or two in bottle and this wine could be something special. I would score it around 86 now but am going to hold off as I think I tasted this under less than ideal conditions. (PnP at the tasting room)

Smells great, blueberry fruit, dates, leather, beef jerky, coffee. Complex aromas. Medium-full bodied. There are some nice fruit flavors early paired with leather and coffee. There is a bitter dark chocolate thing going on right before the alcoholic heat gets a bit strong and overcomes the flavors in the finish. The flavor lasts past this, leaving nice earthy fruit flavors, thinking dates or dried fig. It's nice wine, enjoyable to drink, but a bit too much alcohol. Gentle, rounded tannin and balanced acidity tells me this is ready to drink. Better slightly chilled.

Interesting nose, almost chocolaty, meaty and light on fruit. The palate shows surprising youth, tart cherry fruit show primarily with good acid. The tannins are resolved and while this isn't complex, this was drinking really well. This was quite good considering the price.

Tasted in 2001-2011 vertical: Quite dark and rich coming from the 2011. Cherry fruit, pie crust, stems, earth. Smells great. The mouthfeel shows some of the richness the nose promised, ripe cherries, strawberry preserves, and really nice acidity as the fruit flavors relax and some chalky tannin show in the finish. Good balance and cool transitions from rich fruit to bright acids. 89+
