Thursday, August 10, 2023 - Apparently this used to be Clive Coates MW’s “house red”. With good reason. How Guigal make 4 million bottles a year of this and keep the quality to this level considering the low price is one of the great mysteries of wine. Obviously it’s not the most complex, nor long, but what this delivers in spades is enjoyment. Pretty close to the perfect simple BBQ or party wine. Classic GSM mix so ripe cherry, a bit of spice, blackcurrant and blackberry. From a decent vintage like 2019 there’s a pleasant hit of ripe fruit sweetness but nicely balanced with a seam of tannin. Horrible term but appropriate here: gluggable! Like a warm embrace from a good friend.
