Saturday, February 18, 2006 - Really interesting old Burgundy and nearly outstanding. There seems to be a lot of bottle variation from this fairly recent release of Madame Bize-Leroy. The color on this one showed definite brown among the amber. It's really "animale" in its horsey, gamey nose, which is more attractive than it sounds. No more than medium weight, it's complex and elusive on the palate. Some found the palate more pleasing than the nose, but I preferred the distinctive aroma to the relatively quiet mushroom/truffle flavors and modest, slightly thin, finish. It's always interesting to taste mature wine, especially Burgundy.
