The Roots Fund Charity Wine Dinner (Atelier - Chicago IL): This wine showed magically as always. So much here- red cherry & berry, pomegranate, slowly cooked porcini, dried rose petals, Boeuf Bourguignon, and so much more. So Vosne profiled with clear Grand Cru concentration. My WOTN. Merci, Mark!

The Roots Fund - Chicago Fundraising Dinner (Atelier - Chicago, IL): Wow. What a stunning and gorgeous bottle - and perhaps as good as the 100 point bottle I tasted a 5 years ago, but the Paulee format of our dinner didn't let me quite ponder this wine as much as I would have liked. Everything you'd imagine in the very best of Vosne with the time to evolve while not losing the sexiness of fruit.
Nearly as good as a perfect bottle five years ago. This is the epitome of mature Grand Cru vosne with an intense, layered, powerful nose that screams Vosne spice, black tea, and black cherry. The palate is svelte with concentrated mature fruit. Wow.

Tuesday (Chicago, IL): Wonderful old Burgundy. Outstanding freshness and complexity; layers of autumnal leaves, earth, mushrooms, and fruit. Would probably have guessed something a few decades younger if served blind, really. Delicate and lifted, but with plenty of underlying weight all the same. Always a treat to come across a good bottle of old Burgundy.

Pop and pour. This cynical palate can still be moved: the single greatest red burgundy I have ever had, and a reminder of why I fell in love with the region. A mesmerizing blend of tertiary red fruit, soft cocoa powder, game, earth, and vosne spice. On the palate: spice, earth, dried red fruit. Words are useless: the essence of great Burgundy.

Intensely aromatic; lots of red cherry, raspberry, camphor, and allspice with a delicate, pigeon-like meatiness. Oddly a little biscuity and toffee-flavored on the palate. Not quite as transcendent as the last bottle of this, but still excellent and showing how Burgundy should age.

Ken's 60th Birthday (Smyth and The Loyalist - Chicago IL): Alongside the '64. Amazing spicebox with broad array of red and black berries that are charmingly maturing. Another wine with so much complexity and nuance, from start through its incredibly long finish. Bottle was in perfect condition with great ullage. I've enjoyed this wine many times through the years, and tonight's was the best ever.

Oh my this was lovely. We had this blind and I think I can be forgiven for thinking this was a Chambolle Grand Cru on account of its wonderful red fruit and brown spice profile. There was game - not quite as rustic as Gevrey nor as furry as Nuits - so I thought Chambolle. But when its identity was revealed, the spice component clicked and it made perfect sense. Very pretty violets. This was so harmonious and so beautifully layered. Not shouting its greatness; whispering it. Repeatedly. And convincingly. So devilishly good. This may have been the most complete wine of the night, which is saying a great deal. Delight. 96-97. I owe you one - or 10 - Brad.

Wines from 1964 - 50-year birthday tasting: Really an emotional experience. Still so fresh. Intoxicating nose and it is difficult to single out the many tasting sensations as it is just a perfect wine. Very smooth and silky with a finish that goes on and on - you could still feel its presence the next day. Ethereal.

Spectacular aged Burgundy that has a very light ruby color and a gorgeous, complex nose of sweet earth, dessicated cherries, spices and minerals. On the palate, it is just ethereal in its texture with a fine succulence that is stunningly delicious. Then the finish is so subtly and finely complex with notes of minerals and all kinds of spices. Fabulous old Burgundy.

Clear wine with almost no sediment (after all these years?). Seems a lot younger than the label. Very good balance, and gets better with air. Some kind of anise feeling. Good but slightly disappointing (is this wine really from grand cru and 1964?). Paid close to 600 dollars - my life time record.... Leroy's declassified 2004s are better in my opinion.

Amber-orange with clear rim. Beautiful game, cherries, nutty secondary and tertiary aromas that jump out of the glass and develops over several hours. Medium weight with a texture smooth as silk. A Grand Evening...with Grands-Echezeaux (Kevin Restaurant, Chicago IL): Bright aromatics of red fruit and late summer flowers. Rose petal and strawberry continued from aromas onto the palate and finish. Flavors seemed to start rather delicate but pick up intensity from spice and minerality. Interesting comparison with the 1966 in the next glass, which was as good but more earthy and spicy.

Star of the night, including a 93 La Tache! You would never have guessed that it was this old. Rich big spicy red fruit aroma. Absolutely singing. Lovely red cherry briar with a hint of strawberry. Truly a 'special' wine. Faded a bit over several hours in the glass. 95-96pts 7/05 Full red/pink with only slight lightening. Killer red cherry and rose petal nose with hints of maple syrup (easily the best nose of the evening). Big rich full red cherry briar fruit. Long tight round finish. This was the group WOTN. 94-95 pts. 4/06

Really interesting old Burgundy and nearly outstanding. There seems to be a lot of bottle variation from this fairly recent release of Madame Bize-Leroy. The color on this one showed definite brown among the amber. It's really "animale" in its horsey, gamey nose, which is more attractive than it sounds. No more than medium weight, it's complex and elusive on the palate. Some found the palate more pleasing than the nose, but I preferred the distinctive aroma to the relatively quiet mushroom/truffle flavors and modest, slightly thin, finish. It's always interesting to taste mature wine, especially Burgundy.

This is my wife's birth year...so for Valentine's Day dinner at Truffle's in Clayton I brought it along...not decanted as I thought that it may lose it's fruit to quickly....At first a very woody off-putting nose that finally blew off in about 15 minutes....then a knockout nose of mushrooms and earth that was very very satisfying. On the palate the fruit was good but did not posse the concentration that the nose leads you to believe was coming. All in all the elegance of the bottle was a perfect combination for the evening....while discussing the bottle with Kellie I even managed to slip in the "have you ever experienced anything that is this old but this good sweetie" line.

The Brothers Hersh tempt me with Burgundy... (Seattle, WA): Unreal. I had this wine once before and flipped for it, but this was even better. The nose is smoky and exotic, soaring from the glass with mint and roasted meat, screaming as time goes on, some band-aid, Hermitage like but with more finesse and precision, maybe a hint of barnyard sneaking out towards the end. In the mouth this has huge presence and is remarkably vibrant showing sour cherry, some smoky notes, nice sweetness and poise and gorgeous texture. The finish is long and poignant, begging for another sip. If ever there was a wine to lure one to the 'dark side' (collecting Burgundy which for this Cab and Rhone lover is near heresy), well this is it...

Greg brought a bottle of the recent release he purchased from Premier Cru to our dinner at Wish. The gorgeous nose of young roses was flat out stunning and would merit a high nineties score. And the color was excellent for age with no hint of browning. The cork appeared to be the original one and the level was excellent, Greg told me, when he decanted the wine sortly before arriving at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the wine thinned out rather quickly on the palate and finished modestly, yet sound. The red cherry fruit was hanging on, though, with the complexity that only bottle age can bring. An enjoyable and successful 41 year old burg.

Light to medium brick red coloring throughout. Nose full of red fruits, cherry, spice, hung game/dried meats, mushroom. Medium bodied with resolved tannins and an explosive taste of red and black fruits, spice, mushroom, truffle, earth, hung game, tobacco, tea and cardomon. What Burgundy is all about.

February Portland,OR Tasting Group - 2002 Burgundy + more: Huge amounts of sediment, dark wide brown edges showing substantial age, tobacco on the nose, good fruit still available with candy apple, cherry, and other red fruits on the palate along with the tobacco and coffee notes and nice bottle sweetness, long lingering finish, showing good acid and bottle sweetness, this was a really exciting wine to try. My wine of the night.

Seattle Tasting Group does Burgundy (Seattle, WA, USA): Wow, this was a stunning bottle. The nose was crazy, showing spearmint, cinnamon 'red-hots', leather and increasingly Hermitage-like notes of pine and dried meat. The palate was sweet and delicate at first, seemingly a bit too sweet and perhaps madeirized. However, with air this got better and better, showing stunning depth, intensity and complexity. The finish was my favorite of the night, leathery, chewy, persistent and delicious. The average score across all the tasters was better than 95 points, the unanimous wine of the night, thank you JasonD!!!

Uniform red brick color of aged Burgundy. Initial nose of soft red fruits and spice, with strong sherry was alarming. Taste was pure however, with expansive black and red fruits oferring mouth-coating experience. Tannins full resolved, though not entirely ripe, the mid-palate was lovely with good complexity and layering. Moderately extended finish. Excellent delineation throughout. Fine+

Fine+
