Sunday, June 6, 2010 - Vini Rossi-L'Ultimo Piano (Asti Trattoria): "Undeniably the greatest Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I have ever tasted," stated the Wine Advocate eight years ago, but this was our least favorite in this flight. Purple color, purple fruit, where's the tannin? The nose was weak, fruit was upfront, the midpalate weak, and the finish okay--"less generous, less interesting," this was the lightest of the four wines in this flight. A dozen tasters noted some slight brett with persimmon, black raspberry, cherry, pepper, slate, rose water, nectar, and even some anise flavors. A very drinkable wine, but not grand and Mr. Parker correctly noted this "greatest ever" was to be drunk a few years ago. It's a shame he didn't review the good vintage wines of Edoardo Valentini.
