  • Age your Montepulciano! This wine held up great.

Stewed dark fruits - blackberries, dark plums, black currant. Olive tapenade, dirt, earth, espresso, cedar and spice notes. Definitely aged in barriques; and the oak was used judiciously here. Great with a steak

  • Faux 4th of July - Wine & Friends weekend in NH; 7/19/2019-7/20/2019 (New London, NH): Wine #6. Lots of must and wet cardboard on the nose for me - I thought this was definitely corked although others disagreed. On the palate mature dark fruit, damp earth and wet cardboard.

  • Dark red/black color. The nose is not too pronounced, some earth there mixed with dark fruits. On the palate, blackberries and plums, highly extracted with great depth of fruit. A bit spicy too. Still has good acidity and some lingering soft tannins. The wine has likely seen better days but it's still surprisingly quite lovely and a pleasure to drink (even on the 2nd nite after opening). My guess is that this wine was overpowering in it's use and its age has definitely mellowed it considerably.

  • the second of two bottles served at the thanksgiving table at selkirk manor. the last of a case purchased together with tony j. at CSE. shared with pat, ellen, giulio, donna, frankie and grandpa pomponio. paired with turkey and the usual trimmings. this is one of the better abruzzi wines that we have enjoyed over the years. i recall purchasing this wine because of a favorable notice it received from parker. the wine is fully mature now. in fact, it has held up better than any other reviewer has expected. in addition to ample fruit, the wine has an earthiness that i particularly enjoy. teramo is down the road from san benedetto. will have to make that journey again some time.

  • shared this with pat at selkirk manor to celebrate her birthday. another great bottle from this producer of excellent montepulciano d'abruzzo. concentrated rich dark fruit and earthiness. unmistakable regional origin. confirms that the area can offer exceptional quality. i am not quite as enamored as parker but appreciate his recognition that there is great wine made outside of bordeaux, in sometimes surprisingly modest places. how about some tasting notes from other members who are lurking with inventory of this wine? will try to wait another year for the next one.

  • Vini Rossi-L'Ultimo Piano (Asti Trattoria): "Undeniably the greatest Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I have ever tasted," stated the Wine Advocate eight years ago, but this was our least favorite in this flight. Purple color, purple fruit, where's the tannin? The nose was weak, fruit was upfront, the midpalate weak, and the finish okay--"less generous, less interesting," this was the lightest of the four wines in this flight. A dozen tasters noted some slight brett with persimmon, black raspberry, cherry, pepper, slate, rose water, nectar, and even some anise flavors. A very drinkable wine, but not grand and Mr. Parker correctly noted this "greatest ever" was to be drunk a few years ago. It's a shame he didn't review the good vintage wines of Edoardo Valentini.

  • Consumed over 3 nights and it was excellent each time. Took a little while to open up the first night.

  • served to susan and ira rudin on the occasion of their visit to selkirk manor. this was the best of the bottles we have had so far. it has really come into its own. strong fruit in balance with hefty tannins. this bottle had extensive course grain sedimentation which i have never seen in an abruzzi wine before. i wonder what is unique about their winemaking methods. given the completeness demonstrated by this bottle, i am extending longevity. paired beautifully with pumpkin soup and scallops, ny strip steak, buttered baked potato, snow peas/boucheron cheese/walnuts.

  • brought to tuscan sun to celebrate ellen's 31st birthday. grandma and grandpa pomponio, donna and frankie were with us. also shared a glass with dr. talley whose son was also celebrating a birthday. i bought this wine based on parker's review. the wine continues to be big and bold but not as flowery as he describes. i think he overestimated longevity based upon the high alcohol content. overall, i am thinking that the wine would have been more enjoyable a few years earlier. especially at this price point.

  • This wine was definitely more new world than old world, and at the peak of its drinking window. Black fruits and lavender dominate the nose and palate, with just the slightest hint of earthiness. This wine tastes just like it smells. I would have guessed new world syrah if it were blind.

  • Tasted as part of tasting learning exercise. I believe this bottle must have been corked. It smelled damp, and of mildew, and must. Down the drain.

  • Italy
Served at the July 23rd North Texas Winos Tasting Dinner at Amici’s Signature Italian in Carrollton, Texas. This wine was lovingly referred to as “The Pig Wine” by our Italian challenged winos. It seemed to be a QPR hit for this crowd. Wine was opened and served without decanting. Dark fruit nose with just a hint of sawdust towards the end. Jammy cherry flavor with a hint of earthiness on the finish. Firm tannins. 87 points. Drink now through 2005.
