90 Points

Sunday, February 20, 2005 - I brought this bottle to Cafe Maxx to celebrate my birthday and was expecting great things. (The grilled elk was fabulous, but not the wine.) This bottle was purchased from AMC and appeared to be in outstanding condition. The color was exceptionally deep ruby, with no sign of amber. But even after 4 hours in decanter and glass, the nose was muted as was the palate. Nothing astray and what there was seemed very fine. Perhaps this bottle was just too young to appreciate properly. But the finish was just average, if perfectly pleasant. Very thick and extracted in the Leroy style and no discernable Vosne character yet. The '90 Leroy VR Brulees and NSG Boudots I had a few weeks ago were much more expressive, though not necessary better in the long run. The matiere is here, so maybe this will be evolve into something terrific if it ever comes out of its hard shell.
