5 of 12 decanted @ 5:00 and brought to Claud for 7:30 dinner were it was paired with the 2009 VR Beaux Monts.
Darker color and more restrained nose than the 2009. Darker fruited than the bottle last summer, some spice and earth notes, well integrated tannins, balanced, long finish. This was an excellent bottle but didn’t hit the heights of the bottle last last summer. The best glass was the last glass… I think a longer decant would have helped somewhat

4 of 12 en flight with the 1988 and 2001 DRC Grands Echezeaux (replaced the scheduled 1993 which was MIA). Decanted for 2 hours. This was the definition of a Wow wine at a wonderful dinner filled with 14 other great bottles. This bottle had it all, beautiful youthful color, layers of fresh, bright cherry fruit, Vosne spice and floral notes rise from the glass, the definition of a compelling bouquet. The palate was filled with layers of Vosne fruit and spice, without a hint of the vintages heat. Fine silky tannins, perfect balance, acidity and a long finish make this wine a star

one of the first great burgundy I've had the pleasure of tasting many moons ago. From the same cellar as the Richebourg - even fresher and more acid driven than the Richebourg. It doesn't quite have the same level of mouth coating fruit that the Richebourg had but it still has incredible fresh complex purity of red fruit on the palate. Less of the tannin presence as it seems more seamless on the finish. Quite nice!

Holiday Burgundy Lunch: Lot of discussion around the table about VA. In my experience a lot of Leroy Beaux Monts from the 90's have some VA. I've not been bothered by it generally, but VA sensitive people will want to avoid this. This particular bottle had more VA than I would have preferred, it overwhelmed the other aromas. But the flavor was still there, the rose petals in all their glory.

(Bottle 7942/9298) #2 of 12 and paired with the 1990 Leroy NSG les Boudots
A treat to have these two side by side. The VR was strikingly young, tight and packed with red fruit, Vosne spice. Fine tannins, impressive mid palate, lovely texture, balance and finish. The Boudots was more mature, with darker fruits and a touch of earthiness.

Intense nose of ripe dark cherry and dark raspberry. Dark cherry-fruited on the palate and very ripe with strong balancing acidity. Great intensity here and the finish is borderline extraordinary with a great and aggresive cherry/mineral crunch and loads of complexity with notes of Vosne violet spice and red licorice. Certainly in its drinking window but I imagine more complex Vosne spices will emerge with more time. Purchased on release for $60. 94+
Dark pure colour. Earthy, plummy, raspberry fruit with cherry stone zest. Soft, developed and open knit structure. Has good presence, intensity, and depth of dark fruit and spice flavours. Fleshy, with soft refined tannins and good acidity. Lovely ripe fruits and rich dark spice with an autumnal edge. Drinking well, no point keeping, very ready but not yet in any serious decline.

Incredible Pinot, if not the best I ever have had, it was close. Elegant earthy nose. Rich, elegant balanced. Earth, mushroom and muted spices with a finish that went on and on. It is really difficult to describe this wine because it was so complete that there was no one thing that stood out, rather, just that this was "memorable".

Dark opaque red. Very expressive nose of earth, spice, and hoisin. Sweet on the palate and showing lots of ripe fruit. This is drinking well now, but I will be slow to consume my bottles as the tannins are abundant, and this wine can use more time in bottle, not necessarily for further development, which may come, but to soften the palate a little more. Still, the fruit is also abundant, and masks the tannins early on. A pleasure to drink.
Compared to the 1993 tasted side by side, the 1990 had a little less acidity, more ripe fruit, and dusty tannins. Similar notes on the second day from re-corked bottles. On the third day, the 1990 showed more powerful tannins, but the fruit was still there and the wine was drinking well. The 1993, in contrast, was more acidic and the fruit had faded; it was no longer as pleasant to drink.
Both beautiful wines. I preferred the 1990 at this tasting.

Popped and poured. Ripe red berry and cherry aromas with enticing baking spice. Lots of power and pleasure throughout. Long and dense. this is charming now with further potential for improvement going forward.
An elegant expressive nose. As commented by others, this is a dark ruby color typical of the vintage and terroir. Very well balanced on the palate with a long vosne-spiced minerally finish.

Burgundy night in Scottsdale (Scottsdale): We were able to have this over two days. A typical Leroy nose of exuberant spice, ripe red fruit, some black fruit, iron and mushroom. The palate matched, but seemed a bit tired. Perhaps this was not the best example. It did not hold up well on day 2. That said, Leroy is like sex: even when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

Acker "Paulee" Burgundy Dinner (The Fourth - New York NY): Fill ~2.5cm, cork broke when extracted. I haven't had this wine in several years, but this was much less powerful and fresh than I recall from before. Still lots of good black fruit and great spice, but not as elegant or nuanced as before. Perhaps 91-92 points tonight. Will have to revisit again with a better looking bottle in the next year or so.

Disappointing. I normally love the Leroy Beaux Monts. This was an austere, one dimensional wine. Nowhere near as good as the other vintages we've had. This is the second negative experience with the 1990. Purchased in the mid-1990's and perfectly cellared.

Two San Francisco Dinners with Charles; 5/17/2013-5/18/2013: Still very primary ruby without lightening. Menthol, blackberry, a touch of spice and graphite. Upfront wood which fell into the background. Full bodied, then loosened a bit. Impressively concentrated and dense but lacking some definition and tension. Admittedly, this showed very young, but it never developed as much outstanding complexity on the palate as it had at times on the nose. Certainly no problem in holding for 10 more years.

Tasted blind, this wine had a red/purple center with oranging rims. The medium+ intensity nose of sour black cherry, raspberry, and brown spices was young but impressive.
In the mouth this wine was still young showing a substantial body, great richness and rounded tannins. Given this is still tight, one would expect this wine to pick up 2-3 points with 10-20 years in the cellar. Wow!

DRC 1990 (AuZone, Stockholm): Medium red, bright colour, some brick at the edge. Nose with berries, flowers and elegance. Red berries and cherries, some development, spice and some animal notes, some oak barrel. Rather young in the nose. Slightly more than medium bodied on the palate, red and some dark berries, noticeable acidity, soft tannins, some spice, rather long aftertaste.

Gorgeous nose of rich earth and dark cherry fruit. Lovely black cherry fruit with hints of earth and minerals. Finely concentrated and intense with fabulous complexity on the long finish. Powerful yet feminine, this is classic Burgundy that is just beginning to turn the corner on maturity and has many years left. Deeply satisfying wine.

Massive disappointment. Totally lacking the power and intensity I have experienced in other vintages. took 90 minutes to show itself at all and now, at 2.5 hours it is still just good. L & L (Aoki @ Shaw Centre): Very bright color of medium ruby core with light brownish hue. Absolutely beautiful aromas of spices that is soft and seductive boast from the glass with the background of sweet red and blue Pinot fruits, secondary flavors of autumn leaves, mineral and preserved plummish fruits that added better complexity and bring on to the fully mature, grand Cru like harmonious and balance yet this tasted so young with good energy, drive on the intense mid palate with transparency to the concentrated, sappy, rounded, polished mouth feel which culminated into the long, velvety finish with good depth and finesse. Low level of very fine, firm tannin presented at the very end which only added better depth to the wine and the focus and precision here is top class. Utterly delicious! Definitely a treat for my birthday. Buy - Yes.

Drank this against Leroy 90 Latriciers Chambertin, 90 NSG - Aux Boudots 90 & 93 Rouget Echezeaux First bottle out of the case. Beautiful color, a fabulous mix of black and red fruit aromas rose from the glass while great viscosity and a silky texture reward the palate. This is a sexy wine with a long life ahead of it. Clear winner of this flight.

Popped and poured. Beautiful, deep nose of ripe pinot fruit. Dark ruby. In the mouth, dark fruits complemented by earth and a sauvage character. Still quite young and tannic, but a quite long finish, if just a touch angular in comparison to the 91 Richebourg tasted alongside.

No bricking, nothing to show that it's a 20 year old wine, impeccable storage condition. The nose is so pretty with soft red fruit and freshly picked flowers that just wraps around your nose and doesn't let go. What a seductive sexy nose! On the palate it has a wonderful minty freshness. The mid palate is powerful and rich, filled with intense red berries and sharp acid. Opened up even more over the course of the hour and the freshness only intensified. In fact it was so rich and intense in flavor that is paired with an arugala salad. I read about a lot of bottle variation but this one was drinking perfectly. Easily go on another 10 years before it even goes down hill, still has plenty of stuffing and tannins on the back.

There's sunstantial bottle variation with this wine but this was one of the best ones, sourced from AMC retail. Quite a bit of sediment and the edge is turning orange. The aromas were in the blackberry, even black current, side of the spectrum with some licorice as well. Very rich, but could the alcohol be poking out a bit? Still, there's no denying the pleasure of this emphatic wine. It's more about power than elegance, but that's Leroy and that's 1990. After a couple of hours in the glass, the acidity took over and the fruit could not keep up.

Keith's Blind Challenge (The Square, London): Keith's Blind Challenge. Younger. Full deep ruby. Nice nose. Cherry, caramel. Good acidity, fine but firm tannins. Reasonable length. Rich-styled burgundy. 96 or 99? Still needs another decade. Gosh, 90 Leroy. ***(*1/2)

The color is starting to soften with a bit of orange showing. Yest the nose is quiet, even after a couple of hours in the glass. On the palate, excellent richness and blackberry flavor and finishes strong, but not especially long. I can not see any Vosne typicity, but it's a very fine drink.

Phenomenal showing for this somewhat variable Leroy. Only the incredible '90 Roumier Bonnes Mares could best it and it was close. Clearly at grand cru majesty, intensity and length. Huge flavor of black cherry and Kathy picks up a hint banana. Rich and luscious. Finally at its peak.

Bob and Arlette brought this bottle to Cafe Boulud and what a stunner it was. There seems to be a fair amount of variation among bottles, but I think this was probably the best one I have ever tasted. It' still deep violet in color and it tastes about as young as it looks. Beatiful ripe floral fragrance of dark flowers, plum and black cherry pour out of the glass before you can take your first sip. The palate follows through with terrirfic intensity of fruit and lingering finish with no hint of alcohol. The tannins are still there of course, but so fine, they disappear behind the wall of fruit. Fabulous stuff that can only get better - from the right bottles.

This wine, also contributed by sister and brother in law, was a bit controversial. My opinion was cedar on the nose with cedar and sweet black cherry on the palate. A few people agreed with that assessment, but a few others said barnyard. Myt wife was very precise about that because she does not like southern Rhone barnyard. She said it was a grassy dusty barnyard, not fecal at all. I think this wine had a lot of life left in it and I even noticed a bit of tannic astringency to it, indicating years of life left.

Henri Boillot 2004s and a few other Burgs at Bobby's (Washington, DC): Served following a fantastic 1990 Meo-Camuzet NSG Murgers (see TN), and followed by a terrific 1996 Serafin Charmes-Chambertin (see TN), the Leroy was sort of stuck in the middle and probably didn't have the chance to get some air, unravel and start to shine. Slightly vegetal at first; nowhere near as dead-on maturity-wise as the 1990 Meo-Camuzet Murgers. Slightly hard, dark fruit, with some spice and compost notes. I'd like to have spent more time with this and given it more of a chance to show all it has, though I can't say for sure that it would have come around...

I agree with the previous description. Nose opened up after initial closed earthiness. More spice revealed. Wine has structure and depth, but doesn't sing with the complexity of great burgundy. Two more hours of breathing didn't change things much. Very good wine, but the Les Brulees, which I drank years ago, was much more exciting.

From course of the night on to wine of the night (for me at least). Full pruple red color. Wow! Awesome aroma of huge sweet red cherry and floral violet notes. I can still smell it. On the palate, big bold black concentrated fruit. Still tight with clear acidity and a long life ahead of it. Finished long. Had a piercing, penetrating focus that I don't see often. Still a bit brutish, this will be a truly incredible wine in another 15 years or so. Mid 90s+. Several WOTN votes and consensus WOTF. 2/06

Good Bordeaux, Burgundy and Rhone Dinner (Custom House - Chicago IL): Nose dominated by amazing floral, perfumed character of Leroy at its finest. Very ripe fruit on nose and palate - black cherry and boysenberry with great Vosne baking spice character throughout. Some hints of oak still there. Despite the ripeness, this still has lots of energy and acidity helping keep the wine bright. All the fruit density, acidity and tannins make me think this wine will be at this level or better for 15 or more years.

Burgundy Dinner to Plan More Burgundy Dinners (Chicago IL): Perfect fill, perfect condition, although cork was fairly well soaked through. If you like the Leroy style, you will love this wine. OK, I really like that style. It started with amazing aromatics - perfumed and some asian spice. Still seemed so young - wouldn't have guessed it was a '90. Great black fruit, nice hints of oak. Wine kept getting better as the evening wore on.

I brought this bottle to Cafe Maxx to celebrate my birthday and was expecting great things. (The grilled elk was fabulous, but not the wine.) This bottle was purchased from AMC and appeared to be in outstanding condition. The color was exceptionally deep ruby, with no sign of amber. But even after 4 hours in decanter and glass, the nose was muted as was the palate. Nothing astray and what there was seemed very fine. Perhaps this bottle was just too young to appreciate properly. But the finish was just average, if perfectly pleasant. Very thick and extracted in the Leroy style and no discernable Vosne character yet. The '90 Leroy VR Brulees and NSG Boudots I had a few weeks ago were much more expressive, though not necessary better in the long run. The matiere is here, so maybe this will be evolve into something terrific if it ever comes out of its hard shell.

An elegant expressive nose. As commented by others, this is a dark ruby color typical of the vintage and terroir. Very well balanced on the palate with a long vosne-spiced minerally finish.

Drinking beautifully! Nice spice and and earth on the nose with black cherries. Long finish that is a little sweet. I think this will continue to age nicely for at least another 10 years. No hurry to drink.

Dark fruits with a hint of red, spicy, caramel, pine needles, sous bois and earth. Ripe palate, excellent concentration and long finish. Nicely matured and drinking beautifully.

My score: 91-92 p

Gorgeous nose of rich earth and dark cherry fruit. Lovely black cherry fruit with hints of earth and minerals. Finely concentrated and intense with fabulous complexity on the long finish. Powerful yet feminine, this is classic Burgundy that is just beginning to turn the corner on maturity and has many years left. Deeply satisfying wine.

Massive disappointment. Totally lacking the power and intensity I have experienced in other vintages. took 90 minutes to show itself at all and now, at 2.5 hours it is still just good. Normally, this wine can eclipse grand crus in a tasting, tonight it is just another nice premier. Massively overpriced for that experience

Buy - Yes.

Drank this against Leroy 90 Latriciers Chambertin, 90 NSG - Aux Boudots 90 & 93 Rouget Echezeaux
First bottle out of the case. Beautiful color, a fabulous mix of black and red fruit aromas rose from the glass while great viscosity and a silky texture reward the palate. This is a sexy wine with a long life ahead of it. Clear winner of this flight.
