88 Points

Friday, December 28, 2012 - This is not a 90+ point wine. Wine was uncorked to a nice dark stain, but came out in about 5 pieces. The nose out of the bottle was generic fruit. I've experienced this exact nose in a ton of sub 20 dollar bottles of merlot, cab, meritage, and pinot noirs. That being said, the nose of this bottle was extremely generic and didn't give me anything specific. It smelled like "wine." Poured a very deep dark red into the glass. The nose in the glass was again quite generic, but after about 15 minutes there was a distinct vanilla and blackberry, with a bit of wildflower. The wine was very fruit forward and a bit sweet - blackberry, boysenberry, but also had tobacco leaf and leather notes that carried through to the mid-palate. There was a bit of heat on the finish, but the finish was surprisingly well balanced with some good blackberry, some mocha notes dancing in and out, some rather significant white pepper spice, and some medium tannin that was neither obnoxious nor wimpy. The wine started out pathetic, but finished rather nicely. As long as you just drink this one and don't smell it out, it's a really good bottle. Drink this one now, because it's done by 2013.
