2005 Nicolas Potel Chambertin

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

93 Points

Friday, November 15, 2019 - PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Root”’ day): Medium ruby to the eyes.

Intense dark chocolate, oak notes slowly giving way to more fruits like bluish purple prunes and plums, ripe black berries. Some animale and menthol notes as well. Very ambitious. In between primary and secondary aromas.

Highly mineral, high acidity but also quite high in alcohol. Strong spices on finish. Fruits flavours feel less apparent on palate and appear to have been “sucked away” by the heavy oak used? Tannins are silky.

Would want more fresh fruit flavours to balance out the heavy oak - Should one consider this being one of the “Robert Parker era” wine? Wine-making focused, oak heavy, ambitious wine. Well made indeed hence 93 points but lacks a little authenticity to me.

1 hour upon opening: Slightly opened with more blue pinot fruits. Have quite a bit of material but ultimately still lacks the finesse and structure from the top producers. 93-94 points.
