Tuesday, July 28, 2020 - Is this the greatest Australian wine that I have tasted?

I've had Grange, I've had Hill of Grace, yet its the more unheralded Mount Mary that has always impressed me thebmost from down under.

This was served blind and we were all convinced it was exceptionally high end bordeaux. The nose is perfectly aged and reminded me of many a fine left bank wine from the 80s. Such balance on the palate and a long finish. At 12.5% this is elegant and delicate.

What a wine. I've had the 1994 and the 2015, and I'm convinced they are making some of the best wine in Australia.

I'd also argue that it's also not fair to compare to Grange or Hill of Grace (as they are straight Shiraz rather than Bordeaux blends) - though I do consider both of those wines as more than a little over-rated and expensive for what they are. But that is an entirely different conversation.

In your defence, of the Bordeaux blends available in Australia this would be considered in the top five to ten. If you did enjoy it stylistically I would also suggest you look out for Cullen Diana Madelaine, the Domaine A Cabernets, the Lakes Folly Cabernets, Petaluma Coonawarra or the Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. On the slightly riper scale I'd have a look at the Moss Wood Cab Sav, Woodlands Margaret, Wynns John Riddoch, Hickinbotham Cabernet, Yeringberg Cabernets or the Sorrenberg Cabernet blend...

    cheers, chatters

*pound for pound, and to toss a cat amongt the pigeons, I'd suggest this is probably a Chardonnay...

Yes, never ease to compare the Syrah wines verses the Bordeaux blends.

In terms of other options, I have tried many of the other producers, and have enjoyed them, but there is just something about Mount Mary that makes me go weak at the knees.

That said, and as my wife often reminds me, I have been known to be wrong on many, many an occasion.

I am also the guy that thinks Ducru Beaucaillou and Leoville Las Cases makes the best wine in Bordeaux... So I'm pretty loose with my preferences! Haha

8/19/2020 2:50:00 AM - That does seem to be one of the many onerous duties of wives the world over!

I've not had enough Ducru to form an opinion but I am inclined to agree about Leovile Las Cases...From my side I'd ask for an honourable mention for Leoville Barton and Domaine de Chevalier to the mix...

    cheers, chatters
