93 Points

Saturday, February 8, 2014 - Epic Champagne Tasting (St. Paul, MN): Not bad but the price point for me would scare me away. I have never been impressed with Cristal compared to Krug of Vilmart wines. Very delicate offering with orange marmalade, lemon, citrus, and toast. Medium finish but lacks the complexity of the Krug and Tattinger.

2/9/2014 6:14:00 AM - Cristal really doesn't show until very, very long after its held in the cellar. I think to some its selling point is that it it slides down the throat so easily. Similar to DP from 2003. Not how its meant to be enjoyed, but if somebody brought the wine, no need to not appreciate the smoothness. I have a single of this and will hold for a very long time. Some of the best champagne I have had were from the 90 vintage last year. They could have easily gone on longer. I think 1996 will never age, as it still is similar to its release. good stuff. The price is daunting, like Selosse, if its not the best to you spend your cash wiser on the other stuff. Krug Grande cuvee is okay, I have never been blown away by it. I'm holding some 95 a pair of 96 and it really better jump up and slap me silly because its price is crazier than anything. Vilmart remains to be seen in the aging process. I have some bottle of vintage and NV. Very different style than Roederer. Like Krug it expresses a bit oxidized but very well. I had a very inexpensive grower champagne that was this style and very enjoyable. A mag at $50US, go figure. That's the great part exploring champagne.
