Wednesday, June 16, 2021 - First-rate wine, start to finish. The nose is gorgeous and compelling - dusty, with candied fruit and Christmas spice, and underneath earthy and even animalistic. Horse blanket. When first opened and decanted, it was a very strong funky animal smell - 8 hours in the decanter calmed it down and the nose was brilliant. In the mouth - a very soft feel. Spicy and fine-grained drying tannins, dusty red ripe cherry and red currant. Some black plum. A band of red sweetness and subtle vanilla. Extremely lengthy finish. It was a wow wine - until we drank the 2009 Domaine Pegau. In comparison to the Pegau it was rustic but in a good way. Easily the best Gigondas I ever had.
