100 Points

Sunday, February 11, 2018 - Well what should I say of a wine whose top 10 vintages with the exception of the 1970 I have had the privilege to taste? What do I say of a wine that I have admired and described as the Chateau Latour of Spain?
Well, when I first decanted, I was disappointed with the palate although the nose was flabbergasting. Light crimson and evolved in color, this wine started off as Burgundian in style albeit with the typical caramel, mocha, and blue and black berry aromas typical of maturing Vega Unicos. On the palate however, utter disappointment; the first hour I kept expecting more and sadly nothing happened. Just an average grand cru wine.
I was beginning to believe some of the not so favorable reviews that some of my fellow Cellar Trackers had written.
Then, after a couple of hours in the decanter, the wine had been reborn, transformed, gaining in power and complexity, completely balancing the acidity - which by the way is still there after 50 years! Typical velvet, coating the mid palate with wave after wave of black and blue fruits, mocha, caramel, plums and spice but in such a complex, delightful and refined structure the likes I have rarely seen. And the finish an endless caress to the back palate. Wow, truly amazing.
For all you Cellar Trackers out there with bottles of this beauty, decant for two hours or more to experience the utter delights of this fabulous wine.
