Sunday, March 13, 2016 - Slow ox for an hour, then after a sniff thought this guy could use a decant -- it got about 4 hours in decanter. Noticed a decent amount of sediment when poured into decanter, but cork was stout; stained dark at the bottom, but just the very tip of the cork. More like what you would expect from a 1 year-old wine.

Inky purple in color. Lots of legs in the glass. Nose of mushroom and damp earth. Fruit trended towards plum. Medium + weight, medium + finish. Tannins well integrated already. Would characterize the finish as solid, but unspectacular.

Overall this is a very nice wine, but didn't quite live up to expectations. I have only had the Materium twice before, and those were small/random tastings -- so this is the first bottle of it that I have popped. Maybe my expectations were too high, or maybe I have just been drinking a lot of killer young wines from Napa lately (2012's and 2013's). 94 is no slouch, but for me personally, that is its ceiling. The fruit profile was not my favorite, and the finish left something to be desired.
