Community Tasting Note

Saturday, June 11, 2011 - Back, Back in the USofA (StrEat Restaurant, Austin, Texas): Clear winner of the flight: tops in one group, second in another. A rich and lively dark red wine with whiffs of the barnyard and the pencil box, dried rose, baking spice and dill/green fern. Austere cassis and dark cherry notes with bright acidity, medium tannins and a tea like finish. A few tasters found it unimpressive for a Ch. Montrose, but others liked it immensely and noted it was out of place with the California fruit-driven cabs. This wine was included in the flight because it sold new for less than the California wines, and seemed (and indeed is) a better value, and had a low Parker score compared to the flight's highly rated Cal cabs.
