Sunday, November 24, 2019 - Initially maderized nose with no hint of 85% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot fruit aroma, but with a whiff of stewed green tomatoes. Overwhelming mouthfeel of Saharan sand followed by a Scirocco of desiccated tannins with a small central core of long ago memories of fruit throughout the short- lived finish. It would seem the viability of the drinking window of opportunity of a typical Chianti Classico may be far Less than I had assumed.
Well cellared to no avail. Hopefully the other bottle of this wine will show more favorably. Perhaps grilled lamb later tonight will show, as of now, hidden attributes. Addendum to follow.
With some time in a Riedel Bordeaux glass the off-putting aspects of the nose have diminished. The fruit is a bit more apparent but the tannins are still stubbornly present.
With food the fruit is much more forward and the tannins are more tamed increasing my enjoyment and the score into the “I like this wine” category.
