Thursday, May 30, 2019 - There was only this vintage at the Lord's 2018 en primeur tasting. One of the best wines of the evening. Big blackcurrant nose. Huge amount of fruit and the tannins are restrained at first, asserting themselves later. Superb. Needs a good steak. Tempting to try a bottle now but I'll wait 4 or 5 years.

6/6/2019 7:16:00 PM - Greetings-I am seventy years old thus I cannot wait forever to open my bottles. When would be the earliest date I can start slowly opening the bottles in my cellar? Dave

To some degree it's a question of personal taste. For classed growths of an average vintage I start at 7 years old and then wait a couple of years if it wasn't ready. Adjust up or down by quality of vintage and quality of wine. A great vintage like 2005s for instance are just getting into their stride. Some hot vintages like 2003 were lovely at 5 years. I'm starting to try the 2012s this year. Adrian

You will notice that wine enthusiast looks for traits that younger wines have and usually their drinking window closes a few years before the wine advocate's drinking window starts. It is often amazing to me that one critic gives a window of say 2012 to 2020 and another gives 2022 to 2035 for the same wine. If you have multiple bottles I would recommend you open one in the near future and see how you like it. Personally, I have found, that for some wines like reisling, I don't care for the petrol infused smell of older bottles that many critics rave about. So I drink those on the young side, critics be dammed:)

Yes I have also noticed the difference in drinking windows by different wine writers. I will open a bottle this year and try to get a handle when the wine will be ready to fit my tastes. Dave
