Monday, August 22, 2016 - 100 per cent Chardonnay.
Powerful, yeasty, energetic nose with chalky minerality and a great depth of crushed stone, hint of lanolin, sour apple, greengages, and unripe apricot and peaches. Excellent acidity on the palate, with the fine and discipline perlage generating a silky, dynamic mouthfeel. A tad one-dimensional, but altogether a characterful, mineral, grown-up champagne that speaks as an eloquent witness for the terroir. Quite full-bodied for a blanc de blancs, with yeast, toast, melon, and a hint of acacia honey on the finish. Harmonious. Needs air.
This is outstanding value and will continue to drink well for a decade or so. As with most serious Champagnes, this requires food. Gravadlax and horseradish sauce worked very well.
