Sunday, August 22, 2004 - Rhone Wine Blind Tasting (Virginia): $30 retail on release. Well-delineated, fresh fruit - black cherry/raspberry. Still very primary. Fairly lush texture. Amazingly, this wine has seen a couple totally different forms, IMO: First tasted at the domaine in March of '97 - no notes, but I left impressed and bought a case+. First bottle in Oct. '98 - tight, extremely closed / tannic. It was still deep and brooding, but a little less austere, when opened in a line-up of about fifteen '95 CNPs in Jan. of 2000. Finally coming around, but still structured and traditional, in the Fall of '03. And now... fruit driven and primary?? I'm very surprised. It was a very enjoyable bottle - don't get me wrong - but it came across as more modern this time around. Ten more to go...
