93 Points

Wednesday, December 5, 2018 - Couldn't resist opening one of these, and I'm glad I did - big, fruit-forward nose leaped from the glass after popping the cork, especially bright cherry, which is melded with licorice, spice, and herbs. It closed down promptly in the glass which led us to decanting. It slowly re-emerged at the 2-3 hour mark, and only improved for another couple hours until we finished the bottle. It's a big, fruit-loaded wine, and showed increasing complexity throughout the night (adding roasted game, herbs, and spice notes). Low acidity, and the healthy dose of tannin was never obtrusive; the alcohol was present, indicative of the vintage, but surprisingly little oak/vanilla at this point (which he had feared). We'll hold remaining bottles for a number of years, though I suspect these will be more approachable than the '14s and '13s, which have a notably more structured spine and have not been as forward.
