Thursday, April 14, 2005 - Steaks with Jason (Chez Goldberger): The only other old Mondavi reserve I've had is the 91, which was a benchmark wine for me. This was at least as good as that, and has PLENTY of life left. It had to believe this is 18 years old from appearance or aroma. It has waves of coffee, pine, and thyme. While it didn't have the graphite and forest floor of older Bordeaux, it would not have been out of place in a Bordeaux line-up. Load of cassis, and super structure with tannins in balance with the fruit - this is a complete wine. Mouthfeel is what sets wines apart for me, and this is just seamless. It improved over the couple of hours we had it open, and probably was still improving when I had to go home. I trust Jason enjoyed the rest. Thanks for sharing it with me!
