Saturday, December 19, 2009 - I wanted to check in on this wine after the 2001 Chaupin had a decent showing at the 2001 Chateauneuf tasting at Rothmann's. Oh well. Drinking this next to the 1997 Pegau highlights the extraction/wood in the Chaupin. The fruit is sweet and jammy and there is chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon flavors on the palate. The wood is much more noticable in the 1999 compared to the 2001 and what's even more worrisome is that the fruit seem to be drying out which makes the wood stick out. I did not start to think that this would be better used warmed up and poured over my ice cream dessert, but I do find it sad that the 'winemaker' can turn grapes from very old Grenache vines into a mess like this.
