Still very sweet, almost too sweet, jammy fruit. Lots of volume, lots of extraction. Ripe as well, and it’s a 1999. The 1999 Roger Sabon Prestige was much, much more interesting.

Drank on NYE over a rib roast. Showed beautifully after 20 years in the cellar although we lost about 20% of the bottle due to sentiment after decanting. Opened about 45 minutes prior to serving. It was a brown red color with clear signs of age, but still showing good concentration. On the nose, dark fruits of blackberry, herbs, and spice (black pepper) and some earthy barnyard almost Burgundian notes. The palate was rich with good dark fruits of ripe berries with notes of pepper and earth. Great texture and balanced acidity and tannin. Other notes have indicated this was over the hill, but I found this bottle to be drinking beautifully today. I would not hold longer, but wish I had a few more bottles to enjoy.

Better than previous bottles though it is still a ripe, extracted wine. The fruit has calmed down, is more subtle, flavors of dark plum and dark red cherries. Garrigue and mint notes as well. All in, a decent showing.

The ’99 Chaupin was a real showstopper. On the nose I found soaring aromatics, with fresh crushed cherry, exotic spice, sweet floral tones and forest floor, in an expression that was more like Pinot Noir than Grenache. On the palate, it was soft and enveloping but with a fresh wave of acidity that gave the sensation of weightlessness as notes of cherry pit, cranberry sauce and sweet herbs glided across the senses. The finish displayed perfectly resolved tannin with fresh fruit and inner floral tones. This wine is in a beautiful place and at a perfect state of balance.

Sweeter and more flabby fruit compared to the 1996 Beaucastel. Very Grenache in a way, but I'd prefer a bit more structure and restraint. This is not a bad wine, it's just not in a style I care so much for anymore.

Sweet fruit, very Grenache, spicy, perhaps a bit polished but not over the top anymore. As with the 1999 Font de Michelle Gonnet from the other night I find this to be a decent wine in its own right but compared to the Sang des Cailloux, this came across too sweet for me.

First I've had of this label and was very enjoyable. Nice cherry red color with the opacity one would expect from an unfiltered wine. Nice perfume. Saw lots of comments about lavender, and yeah I maybe got that. Still had nice bright fruit on the palate; cherry and maybe raspberry. Very easy to drink but if I was sitting on more I wouldn't hold it much longer.

La Janasse at The Oxford Wine Circle (Oxford University): Extremelly delicate and Chaupin-like, this 1999 seems like to be an unourished Chaupin as it doesn't have either of the structure, the concentration and the matter of its younger peers. I don't see any reason to age this any further.

Similar to a previously tasted bottle. The wine shows a mature profile with it giving a better showing on the palate than the bouquet. The wine has deposited a fair amount of sediment and benefit from careful decanting (purchased on release).

Has mellowed down since last hit in 2009 and is now, much to my pleasant surprise, drinking really well. There is plenty of sweet, spicy cherry fruit on the nose and palate but it comes across less pushed and extracted than a few years ago. The wine is soft and gentle with a perfume of lavender on the back end of the palate. The acidity keeps the wine decently fresh. I've always been worried about how the wines from Janasse would age and this bottle provides a glimmer of hope.

Decanted and poured, this wine showed well on the palate; however, the bouquet shows some unevenness that distracts from the overall impression of the wine. This wine is fully mature and not likely to benefit from additional bottle age.

Curious. Somewhat astringent at first - thought it was flawed but came together after half an hour or so. Spices and black fruits. Rather lacking mid-palate. Rather better with food. 88.

I wanted to check in on this wine after the 2001 Chaupin had a decent showing at the 2001 Chateauneuf tasting at Rothmann's. Oh well. Drinking this next to the 1997 Pegau highlights the extraction/wood in the Chaupin. The fruit is sweet and jammy and there is chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon flavors on the palate. The wood is much more noticable in the 1999 compared to the 2001 and what's even more worrisome is that the fruit seem to be drying out which makes the wood stick out. I did not start to think that this would be better used warmed up and poured over my ice cream dessert, but I do find it sad that the 'winemaker' can turn grapes from very old Grenache vines into a mess like this.

Opened and let breath for about 2 hours prior to serving. Notes of grilled meat and iodine on the nose to start but that evolved quickly to sweet raspberry jam after some air in the glass. Nice fruit on the med-bodied palate, good balance and a solid medium length finish. Tasty stuff for the price and seems to be in a good drinking window now.

The South of France in Colorado: 1999 Chateauneuf Horizontal: My notes say (admittedly hazy at this point): jammy, strawberries, huge savory fruit, great intensity and length. It was a bit more funky with Provencal nuances and garrigue than some of the others which showed purer red cherry and cranberry fruit. I really liked this and it had more oomph than the Clos de Papes.

Bizarre. After-finish is much more reminsicent of vodka or whiskey than of wine. My wife thought this was one of the worst wines she'd ever had. Purchased on release, climate-controlled storage since then; cork and foil weren't pristine but I've seen plenty worse. Is heat damage a possibility here?

Cork in perfect condition. Light bricking on the edges. Took 30-60mins to open up in the glass, but very expressive nose when it did. Raspberry, dark fruits with prominent plum, iron, blood, leather and asian spices. Round warm palate with fig complementing the flavors in the nose.Tannins seem fully integrated, some heat sneaking in on the back end. Medium length finish with good complexity, with mineral and tobacco notes hanging on. I really enjoyed this one, great complexity and balanced, with just a little heat as a detractor. I don't know if it'll get much better.

Some bricking is evident in the medium-dark ruby rim. Nose is very fragrant, with rost beef, sweet framboise liqueur, rose petals, caramel, hints of soil and garrigue. Sweet, ripe, and palate-staining with surprisingly firm acidity and some tannic bitterness on the long finish. Lovely, and at its peak.

Medium black/ruby. Spicy, attractive nose of ripe sour cherries, vanilla, toast, damp leather. Medium bodied and rich with good balance. A successful wine; drink now or hold for up to 5 years more. Consumed over about a four hour period, this improved with every glass. I'll try to hold off on my other bottle for at least a year, but it will be hard because this stuff is rocking right now. A dark ruby in color, initially some rather strong brett/horse odors which blew off within about an hour of opening (Audouze style). When we finally poured a couple of glasses, it was just lovely strawberry, mulberry, dark fruits, roses, a touch of horse/sweat, with a nice rich mouthfeel and 15 to 20 second finish. Really lovely, i spent about as much time sniffing each glass as drinking it.

Absolutely delicious. Opened, once again, with a 1999 Clos des Papes to taste next to one another. Both are drinking extremely well, with the Chaupin having just a little more Rhone funk to it. This is a very nicely perfumed CdP, with notes of tarragon, fennel, and other herbs. While many of my CdP's have a very nice herbal aroma, this one struck me as rather unique, and incredibly nice. In the mouth the wine is an equal match, presenting nice intensity in the fruit, smooth (glycerin?), and yet incredibly well balanced. Plenty of soft/round tannin. The finish has nice length to it as well. Second night the nose gained a nice smokiness or even smoked meat element, and the wine lost absolutely nothing in the mouth, remaining intense. A great Grenache!
