Sunday, November 17, 2019 - The 2007 Ruffino Modus, composed of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 25% Merlot, was aged for 12 months in French and American oak casks and was rated #25 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2010.
Decanted, and allowed to breathe.
Deep and opaque in the glass and glass staining after the swirl. Still holding it's pigment well.
The nose shows the mature notes that lead with dominating scents of leather and tobacco followed by the notes of tar and pine resin, forest floor, dried porcini, dried rose, dry aged meats, walnut bitters, spent ground coffee, and wild herbs with traces of dried fruits that consist of cherry, mission fig, cranberry and currant.
The palate remains on the full side showing mouth watering acidity and smooth but gripping tannins that expand across the palate and gain through the finish. Flavors mimic the nose showing dried porcini, dusty leather, cigar tobacco, dried herbs, decaying rose petal, earth and loam with cured air dried meats, dried cherry, dried cranberry and blueberry with fig and currant. The intensity accelerates through the long finish.
So much bang for the buck and a wine that has shined with cellar time. I have had the pleasure to enjoy this wine along its development since release and continues to show how well made it was.
