Just adding an update for the community. While southern rhones from 99 do not seem to be heading in a great direction based on my tasting of late, the ones that have excessive oak have really closed and dried up IMHO. This wine was likely never made along those lines, it has aged rather well. It's not nosediving, but it should be enjoyed soon.

Fresh, crushed raspberry, spicy clove, mushroom, iodine and a touch of leather. Rather light on body and fruit flavor. A nice crisp, red-fruited, spicy finish. Nothing special but a good Tuesday night wine.

From magum: medium red with amber tinges. Very balanced, soft fruit: cherry and raspberry. Minerals, spice, leather in harmony. Certainly not a opwerful C du P, but a real crowd pleaser on Christmas Eve.

1999 Chateauneuf Horizontal; 4/18/2009-4/19/2009: Expressive but not overripe nose of tobacco (corvino-like), plum, chocolate, sage, fennel. Seamless, texturally striking palate and long finish. Rich without being cooked or jammy.

I agree with Eric's tasting note, but thought that it was a little better than he did. The finish was still a little cliped, but I thought that there was such great spice from the Grenache that it more than made up for it. A wine to drink now.

A pretty wine showing raspberry, maple syrup and earthy notes. Light bodied and rather clipped on the finish. Really lacks intensity and volume. Drink over the next 2-3 years.

The South of France in Colorado: 1999 Chateauneuf Horizontal: Very CDP bouquet of garrigue, lavender, dried cherries, with some sherry notes. Light bodied and dull on the palate, however, this was my least favorite wine. (87-88 pts).

This wine was singing tonight. Absolutely delicious. Not a massive wine, but very well balanced with lovely complexity.

Seattle Tasting Group does 'Go-to Wines' (Seattle, WA, USA): Light color. This shows chocolate and some milky notes on the palate. Very spicy with some clove. Somewhat clipped finish.
