Last bottle was 5 years ago, I rated it a 75. This one was quite good, and I think the youthfulness has worn off, revealing a nice underlying wine. Black cherry fruit, charred wood, plum and stewed mushrooms, supported by med acidity and a long and satisfying finish. A pleasant surprise, purchased for $52. Drink now through 2022.

Way high on the alcohol level...that was about all I could taste. Wine was decanted for several hours and stored in our cellar since '09 and it was not very good. Tasted well in the mouth, but finish was harsh. Glad I didn't share this wine with any friends thankfully. Real bummer.

PnP. The color of this wine was deep ruby at the core, fading just a little to the rim, and listed as 15.1% abv. On the nose, this wine smells just a slight bit off to me, coming across very closed down from a fruit perspective, with overriding notes of charred wood, and very noticeable volatile acidity. This did not blow off over the hour that this wine was consumed. On the palate, the wine has medium body, is fully dry, with just a bit of plummy fruit coming through, which is completely overtaken by the charcoal and burnt ember flavors. The mid palate has an almost sour taste, which continues into the thin, medium length finish. This wine was purchased directly from the winery and stored in perfect conditions until now, so I will see if this is a bad bottle, or if the other bottle I have has these same problems.

Deepest, darkest black cherry red all the way to the edge of the glass. Almost opaque, like a good petite syrah. Smell the cherries and the plums, with some cedar and sweet tobacco. Taste dark fruits with a nice remnant of the oak. Smooth and silky. Tannins have softened but are still present enough to give structure and to brace the fruit. Classic Howell Mountain. Very nice. Too bad it was my only bottle.
