  • Lovely wine. Sour cherry note. Light and elegant Pinot. Bright strawberries at the end of a rather long finish. Unfortunately broke the cork in the bottle so had to contend with cork bits. Ugh

  • One was good--a little taught at first but opened up to a decent, if not excellent pinot with some time in the glass.

The other bottle was flawed, which was expected (we got a discount on the wines because the corks were irregular and there was a lot of bottle variation).

  • Past it's drinking window. Fruit dissipated, acidic and bitter. Down the drain.

  • Cork is longer then normal one, about the length of those of Bordeaux Grand Cru, Joseph Phelps, Opus One. Was able to pull out fully using old wine opener. Crimson color on cork with white crystal
Color: transparent dark red with light yellow rhim = 4
Nose: toast and floral note = 3.5
Taste: mostly black fruit, some sweetness, more open up after half hour decant, with some coffee favor. Smooth but firm tanin = 4
Finish: medium to long finish = 4

  • Not a religious experience but quite lovely

  • Nose is somewhat restrained. On the palate, it’s light-bodied, and just tart cherry cherry cherry from the get-go, with more loam/mushroom/earthy notes emerging mid-palate, with light tannins and a short finish of tart red berry. Not bad, but a touch too much acidity for my taste. I’d also say drink this up, as it’s not likely to last much longer.

  • I have never seen a wine with a cork as crumbled and difficult to remove as this last bottle.

On the nose it seemed that the bottle had gone bad but I let a glass sit open for ~3 hours and that smell blew off. However, the fruit was entirely dissipated and the wine had a short, linear finish.

Will try it on day 2 to see if there is any improvement. For me, the 3 bottles of this just had too much variation.

  • I see notes of variability, but these were 3 of 3 for me. See previous notes for details, but really nice stuff, nice aged characteristics. I'd drink soonish at this point.

  • There seems to be a good bit of bottle variation with this wine. This was more 'typical'...translucent and not as cloudy as a stunning bottle earlier this year.....less funk, tasty, shortish finish

  • This bottle was not as cloudy/funky/fragrant/wonderful as a stunning previous bottle, but perhaps more solid and typical than another bottle. Cork was in good shape, hint of breaking at the rim, evolved berry flavors lacking the funk of the best of these bottles.

  • Fragile cork, pale red color with some light bricking around the rim beginning. Tart cherry, strawberry and a refreshing acidity. Overall a graceful new world pinot. Fantastic QPR although I'd drink up as I imagine it's on the downward slope.

  • Cork broke on this one.

Nose was fairly restrained. Palate has medium acidity, good earthy notes and cherry/raspberry that is enjoyable but a little heavy on the palate.

  • took 4 hours for this bottle to completely fill in.

Once it was fully open, there was a lot of earthy notes. Feels like the floor of a forest. Lot of mushrooms and finishes with some tart raspberries. Already showing signs of age in the color but nothing on the nose.

  • Another banger! 2 for 2, with consistent notes as last time, though my cork did actually break this time (was able to get the 2nd half w/ careful corkscrew work to my surprise), and I'm a point less in overall impression with this bottle, but still a fantastic wine. I wish I got a case of these.

  • Utterly fantastic wine for the price. I would put this up against any new world PN in the $35-50. Color is a rusty ruby which a absolutely adore. Nose is restrained fruit with mushroom and cedar. In the mouth it earth forward with raspberry to follow. My gut feeling is this wine will not age as well as some culty new world PN it drinks absolute delicious.

  • Very advanced in appearance...a cloudy brick color orange edges.....on the palate, somewhat advanced, tannins are largely resolved, sufficient acidity to provide balance..... all in all a very pleasant surprise, loamy, subdued fruit, mushrooms....First bottle opened with an ah-so with good results. The cork did break when I used a screwpull on the second bottle. One bottle clearly showed better than the other 93 pts and 89 pts respectively

  • This is great-loamy, truffles, and reserved pinot expression that is not expected from an American California wine. Old world terroir coming through with new world mineral soil expression with slight fruit of plum.

  • Wow, this far exceeded any expectations I had; fantastic! It actually looks and drinks older than I'd expect for a 9 year old wine, but I loved it. Transparent crimson color with considerable bricking. Aromas of red pinot fruit, earth, red flowers, cola, orange peel, and black tea. Medium body and acid, medium+ finish, and flavors of red and dark red fruit, black tea, and orange and lemon rind. There's a definite "aged" quality to the flavor and aroma as well that doesn't directly translate to a specific descriptor for me, but I quite enjoy it. I can only hope the other 2 of these, and 3 '08s in this pack are as good as this. Great showing.
Edit: I see people talking about broken corks, but mine came out just fine, no problem.

  • Rich texture, candied cherry, strawberry, hint of oak, gorgeous Pinot. Wish I had bought a case.

  • Brick colored in the glass with hint of brown at the edges, aromatic red berry and herbal nose, palate of ripe bing cherry, cranberry, tanins and acid tug at the mid palate, balanced long finish with notes of vanilla and wood. Very nice. Cork was is great shape and came out of the bottle just fine. A delicious expression of a single vineyard Russian River Pinot. Thank you Last Bottle.

  • very pleased to enjoy the wine a great deal, despite the cork breaking (as it did for so many others). light, restrained, elegant, nice cherry and earth, a little alcohol but more like a single malt scotch than anything nasty.

  • The cork broke but was able to salvage it. Elegant wine with pinot traits. Not overtly acidic as some reviewers noted. Good balance of elements though not a life changing experience. Considering what I paid through last bottle it was a good value.

  • This bottle was not overtly corked like the last one which tasted like nail polish and went down the drain. This bottle was some where imbetween, yet drinkable. It tastes like a classy pinot that unfortunately still had a bit of volatile acidity going on. It was drinkable and somewhat pleasant(mid-80s) but was disappointing because if it was in pristine shape, it would have been a 90+ wine based on its elegance and class. Too bad. As it was, tastes 2/3rds like a classy pinot and 1/3 like a really abrasive cheap wine. 88 based on average of mid80s and 90+ that it probably would be in decent shape. Almost a victory after prior bottle disaster. One more bottle left to see if I get lucky. Cork was in slightly better shape than the last one. Broke, but didn't disintegrate.

  • Unlike the previous reviews, I found the wine to be a pleasant, pretty Pinot. It did not express in an overwhelming way, but it was with grace and purity. Considering the adverse reviews from others, I was expecting the wine to disappoint, especially given that the last 1/3 of the cork broke off as they did for other reviewers and I had just gotten the six bottle combo from Last Bottle delivered. I also had to push the remaining cork into the bottle, but the wine came out with a perfume dancing on my initial sniff and the ensuing taste on the palette was a sweet fruity kiss (albeit, it was a bit thin as some reviers described but nothing Un-Pinot like -- in fact I had the remaining third today and the wine did get more masculine. But I prefer the prettier version of yesterday.). I thought it was the best Pinot I had under $40; of course, I got a great deal from Last Bottle for the '06&'08 combo for less than $30 for the pair. I can't wait to try the '08.

  • I'm afraid previous reviewers had flawed bottles.
Once I read the reviews, I had to find out for myself. I too had purchased from Last Bottle and couldn't believe those guys would sell what was described.
I allowed the wine to rest upright a week after receipt. The cork is long and requires you to send the corkscrew in deep; mine came out whole with fine pink crystals on the cork. Aromas of cherry cola typical of Bacigalupi fruit. Firm integrated flavors of black cherry and tart plum with a nice long finish. No flaws, no faults. Still drinking well after 48 hours. Should drink well another 3 to 5 years.
2006 was a wetter cooler year; Pinot Noirs of that vintage are typically higher in acid and this is a good example of 2006 Bacigalupi very similar to John Tyler of the same vintage.

  • Amazingly unpleasant. Cork broke but butt was retrievable. Cloudy dark red with brownish tinge. The bouquet has flowers and fruit but is marred by volatile acidity, which did not blow off. Red fruit and vinegar on the palate. This goes down the drain, I can't even cook with it. Shame on Last Bottle!

  • As previously mentioned, cork shredded when opening. Not a good sign. A very drinkable pinot, but fairly thin over the palate. I too am surprised Last Bottle hyped this one.

  • I'm really surprised Last Bottle would sell this wine. This seems to have serious VA and is clearly moderately flawed. Cork shredded too. Nose with hint vinegar. Elegant palate, but too flawed to appreciate.

  • I believe this wine was flawed, which is a real shame, because the elements of a great wine were present. The cork broke in the bottle, and I had to push it into the juice to get the wine out. Tremendous variation among glasses. Cooked fruit aromas abounded, but each glass we poured smelled different. The second one in particular smelled way off, like rubbing alcohol, but the palate was actually quite nice. Very light in color with pleasant light cherry flavors. The texture of the wine implied that it was unfiltered. Quite a delight, setting aside the variations among glasses and the problems with the nose. That may sound ridiculous, but it's clear that this was a top-flight wine.
