  • Garnet. Beguiling s/w perfumy cherry nose, touch of [oak] sweetness. Smooth, medium body, nice acid tannins receding but still present, linger on gums.

  • Not nearly ready as a PnP, I aerated this in wide-bottom decanter for 3,5 hours; was ideal. More of everything compared to a bottle last year. And when I say more of everything, I reference the things I like, acid, tannin, fruit, etc. Kind of in that order, but not necessarily. The rim shows a little age, clear. Medium-bodied, highly aromatic, with a great sense of place; it's become quite elegant in a slightly rustic way. This hit all the right notes, and is likely to drink at this level for the remainder of the decade, depending on how cool your cellar is. A few ounces the following day were nearly identical. A joy. highly recommended

  • Fruit here is not as sweet as the 1997, but not as structured or as big as this. Lovely wine. Glad I have more.

Fin balanse.
    Lang.

    Trengt litt tid!

  • PnP

Incredibly fresh with mushroom notes on the palate and nose. Wow.

  • This bottle didn't show as well as the last few. Good, but seemed a bit tired. I'll open another one soon.

  • Half a glass poured and the bottle left to slowly air for an hour, it needed another hour in the glass before it really opened up. Just the start of some bricking into the wine and still looking youthful. So much acidity here that it really benefits from being drunk with food. Lovely cherry fruit and violets, a touch of leather and tobacco, lovely length. I think there’s still more to come here but with a little patience it is a beautiful chianti to drink now.

  • A really pretty red cherry nose. This is bright, dusty, and with a good deal of class. Structurally it's very lifted, with abundant fine tannins that don't necessarily intrude on the wine but that do have the final word. This is still young, and would benefit from a long decant or, better yet, more bottle age.

  • Cork was wet halfway up, but not to worry. What a lovely bottle this is. Color is transparent Ruby, nose is muted with dark brooding fruit and damp earth. Wow, so bright and expressive right out of the gate. This wine is delicious! Glad I have 4 left!

  • Just entering its preferred plateau. Well-structured, balanced and still managing good freshness, this seems to have it all even if today's showing seems like it's holding something back. I wanted to look at this on day 2, but things happen. Impressive, classic, very pure. Drink or hold thru the next 6-7 years, at least. recommended+

Served non-blind; splash decant. Excellent food wine.

  • A wee bit oxidized in the nose, but the atset is sweet harmony and joy; rich and round, seems a point to me right now.

  • Completely different wine since the previous bottle. The wine has hit a plateau in my opinion after this experience. Decanted for 30 minutes but followed it over 4 hours, it did not evolve or change at all...stayed constant. The nose had raisin, fig, herbs, cloves, some earthiness, mushrooms. The taste was like a madeira with the roasted notes, same raisin/fig flavors, but nice cherry flavors to balance out all the secondary and tertiary flavors. The wine was balanced and paired very well with all the food at the Italian themed tasting. Very interesting experience.

  • This wine continues to impress! Just like my last note on this wine.
    Fantastic!

  • Color: ruby / brick. Nose: earthy / loam, autumn leaves, and just a hint of sweetness. Mouth: surprisingly rich and mouth-filling, excellent length; soft tannins that are softly assertive ; very nice acidity. Showing its maturity but I don't think it has quite peaked yet.

Have had this wine yearly since its initial release [honeymooned at Monsanto that year, we drink on our anniversary] and this is the wine's best showing yet.

  • Bottle in immaculate condition. Apparently this was double decanted before serving. This was tight tight tight. It took a good 30 mins in the glass to get the aromatics going, there was some great pure fruit here and some fantastic acidity especially considering its age, but definitely would reward more time. A class act but more to come.

  • Stunning wine. Big, rich, layered and complex. I think this wine has reached its drinking window, but will hold for years to come.

  • Tuscany holiday spring 2014; 4/11/2014-4/18/2014 (Tuscany (San Gimignano)): Decanted and drunk over 2 hours. Strong red colour with bricking around the edges. the nose is in that perfect place for me when the secondary aromas just start to dominate the fruit. theres leather and tobacco over the cherry and violets and a mouth watering acidity, a nice touch of tannin to gicve it a little grip to finish, but doesn't bother the overall smoothness of the wine, the finish was fabulous and went on with waves of flavour keeping it going. splendid with truffle dishes.

  • The color was a dark red fading into burnt orange. On the nose I found a bouquet of red berry, plum, dried flowers, tobacco and floral undergrowth. The palate was silky smooth with tart red fruit, tobacco, minerals, and herbs with an acidic drive that made the mouth water. The finish was all classic Chianti, with tart red fruit, inner floral notes, and earthy soil tones. This was still young, yet drinking beautifully. I wish I had bought a case of it.

  • Delicious. Still dark red, beginning to show a hint of browning. Developing tertiary characteristics. Smells of dark cherry, damp earth and a hint of creosote. Has nice sappiness, firm tannins with ample acidity to cleanse the palate as well as a long finish. It is hard to beat 'Il Poggio'! Awesome! Glad I have seven left!

  • This is a strong, solid concentrated wine with ample dark fruit and lovely balance. I'd agree with previous reviewers about the plum flavours. It is strong and drinking well, but there is no hurry to drink it - seems ready for another 5 or even 10 years...

  • Decanted 2h but already at its best in the first half an hour. Pale red color. Chocolate, liquorice, leather and oak. Best expression of top Chianti. Paired best with a true Fiorentina from Eat's Exclesior. PD with me

  • This is the first chianti that i've had with any age on it. The nose stays pretty consistent from first pop to an hour later. The nose has some dusty notes, but otherwise the fruit is very prevalent, some raisin sweetness, and hint of oak. Lots of dark fruit and raisin taste, nice acid backbone, with a descent bit of tannins to keep the wine going. This has several more years left in it but i'm enjoying the fruit now to risk losing it. Drink now through 2015.

  • Initial nose of dense plum, leather, Istanbul tobacco, with brighter blackberry and raspberry hints. It drank like silk at first, and relatively light to what I would eventually experience. After thirty minutes the wine developed heavy tannins and a dry finish, adding smells of old purse, hay barn, and horse saddle. Many would claim this to be brett., but I found it very enjoyable. Another half hour brought the second coming of fruit in its original form of plum, this time a sauteed plum sauce, with smells of roasted pork, beef stock, seasoning, spices, and cranberry. The tannins softened to form excetional length, strength and beauty. Flavors of rich, ripe blackberry and other dark fruits coated the mouth. A wine of such aromatic density, complexity, concentration and structure deserves decades of aging and a meal for kings.

  • Delicious! Orange rind, sour cherry, leather, soy and roses. Slightly tart long finish. Great wine in its peak window (I wouldn't be surprised if some thought this is already past peak, as it's got a fair amount of tertiary character, though still plenty of fruit and to me it's perfect now).

  • I opened this and poured it into 2 375s. Drank one last night with 1-2 hours of air. Opened the second one tonight. This is a seriously concentrated wine. Last night it smelled more like an Australian Cab than a CCR. There was a ton of menthol and eucalyptus on the nose initally. In fact, the 375 last night was just kind of 'eh'. Tonight, a different story. Big and rich with bright sour cherries, firm tannins. Long too. Just shows how important proper aeration is for a storied wine like the Monsanto 'Il Poggio'. 93

  • Just reading my prior note, I see that it doesn't reflect the enjoyability of this wine. While it seems to have some bottle variability, even the "lesser" bottles are pretty delicious with tons of sour cherry, cedary spice, and silky tannin. Nice acidity. THIS bottle, however, was outstanding, showing none of the falloff with air that a couple of others did. Excellent, mature Chianti Classico Riserva. Tons of sediment, by the way...

  • Decanted for 6 hours. SIGHT: medium garnet with outer rims of salmon, then orange. Medium plus concentration and viscocity. NOSE: shoe polish, damp earth, baked sour cherry, dried sour cherry, saddle, barnyard; PALATE: turned wet earth, leather, cooked sour cherry, black cherry, rusty nail, tea leaves; ASSESSMENT: TANNINS: medium; ALCOHOL: 13.5%; ACID: medium plus; COMPLEXITY: medium plus; FINISH: medium plus; Wine has aged wonderfully and was a joy to drink. Tannins have softened nicely. Cherry and red fruit are a bit dominent on finish.

  • smooth, held up with a filet and blue cheese... had alittle metalic aftertaste, the cork was alittle shotty so not sure if we had stored it properly... would like to have another one that was younger to compare.

  • I've now had three bottles of this from the same source, each notably different. This was quite excellent for a little over an hour, then the fruit started to go south and a slightly less pleasant wet-doggy element moved forward in the mix. That said, for most of the bottle it drank like a great mature Sangio. Arguments can be made that this wine should last a lot longer, but I'd say it's at peak now and should drink well for at least the next few years....but I wouldn't bet on a long life ahead, at least for these particular bottles.

  • Perfect example of a sangiovese entering maturity. The color was red heading toward burnt orange. On the nose was a bouquet of dried flowers and potpurri, undergrowth and tar but all the while showing plum fruit and caramel. The palate was silky smooth with raspberry fruit, flower petals, rosemary and a hint of aged oak. The finish was sour berry but not dry, instead it was fresh and smooth.

  • Very dark, a lot of sediments (it had been frozen on the way from continental Europe to Norway). Pretty short, a lot of tannin and acidity. Not rated.

    Oppdatering (flasken tom...):
Ekstremt mye bunnfall. Ser litt "stilkete" ut, og tildels også som sukkerkrystaller i en riesling. Resultat av frosten?

  • Powerful yet refined style. This is as Chianti should be: traditional styled, but vinified with most modern techniques. Very good wine. Needs air (so decant), can hold for many years.

  • Aromas of cherry, dried flowers, red licorice, cedar and sage rise from the glass to form a gorgeous, rich and interesting nose. The palate comes across as more advanced than expected but amazing none the less with strawberry, herbal tea with honey, minerals and bacon fat. The finish is long with sour cherry fruit and still shows a generous amount of fine tannin. This is classic in every way

  • Dallas 2nd Wednesday Group - Italians (Mi Piaci's in Dallas, TX): WIMLNR

"Tasted" April 9, 2008. Opened and served immediately. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Unfortunately the wine was corked. No rating.

  • Italian Wines at Mi Piaci: Large Italian tasting. Minimal notes. Still so young, and seemed a bit off. NR

  • All the classic Chianti flavors, but this is a big-boned example with a bit more richness, pungency, sweetness, and funk. Dried and macerated dark cherry fruit with some sweet berry notes as well. Forest floor with a whiff of tar. Copious spices; still a bit tannic. Minty. Rich on the palate but with some still-firm acidity. Long finish that brings back the dried cherry flavors. Probably better with a few more years in the bottle, but compelling right now.

  • Rubi. Aromas bastante característicos com frutas secas, couro, tabaco e especiarias. Na boca ótima acidez, taninos marcantes e bom equilibrio. Final médio a longo. Excelente.

  • Disappointing for a 1999 chianti. Past it's prime - drink up. Little length. Perhaps why was on sale for -30%?

  • BYO at Gabby's. Bold and brash. Many interesting notes but too young. Concerned about somewhat hollow midpalate.
