  • Still very drinkable, although shorter in length and less complex than it was, still nice cherry notes and balancing acidity.

  • Very much like the last bottle, lots of cherries, strawberries, citrus rind, and earth. The acidity is quite nice, so much better than the 2011 version. Just really, really tasty.

  • Consistent with previous bottles although slightly less "fresh" at this point. Still, a juicy, tart red fruit laden rose that went great with some grilled pork chops.

  • Still a nice cherry nose, with a burst of sweet cherry up front. The cherry dies off, with the finish more strawberry. The acidity seems diminished, but still a good bottle.

  • Lovely Rose. Smooth, long finish. I got a hint of red cherry flavor - maybe some strawberry. Great with our steamed little neck clams. Good pick for Rose Day.

  • A bit over the top for some, but always delicious to me. It's always fun to turn a new group of people on to a friends wine....

  • Strawberry and watermelon candy but not overly sweet. Nice finish. Yum. All 4 that tasted loved it, wish I had more.

  • NC Cindy Tasting, Sans NCWino (WineKnurd's House): Rosé taste-off, non-blind. Bright translucent cherry red, almost neon, the nose is light strawberry candy and sweet watermelon, almost like a watermelon Jolly Rancher. The palate is bursting with strawberry, with a touch of kiwi-like metallic flavor. It is perhaps a touch synthetic, and it has considerable residual sugar. It maybe wasn't showing quite as well for me as it was last time, but I still liked it quite a lot. I was in the distinct minority in this view, however, as others at the table thought it tasted fake. I like it and would happily buy more, even at the relatively pricey $17 purchase price.

  • Not much more that I can add from previous notes and reviews.

Went well with homemade chicken pot pie!!

  • What a great Rosé. I'm not getting much on the nose other than some candy apple, but the palate is lush with cherry, red raspberry, red apple and melon with a lengthy finish. Refreshing and wonderfully complex.

  • Again, no detailed notes, but still delicious. If a rosé can ever be called hedonistic, this is the one. Off-dry, and packed with fruitiness, this is wonderful juice. I promise I'll give it a full note the next time I give it a whirl.

  • A little bubbly...maybe some malolactic fermentation going on in the bottle. Back into the cellar and will try again later. Will pop a Bedrock now, then re-visit. Sure enough, the funk and carbonation blew off an hour or so later and then everone the hell out of this wine. Great job Dave! This stuff is delicious! Similar notes to other bottles.

  • C: Jolly Rancher cherry red
N: Strawberry, raspberry, cherry candy, after breathing some: bubblegum
P: Delicious, acidic and slightly sweet; strawberry, cranberry. Beautifully balanced.

Consistent with first bottle. Excellent effort!

  • Great chilled on a hot summer day. Nice acid with strawberry and sweet cherry.

  • First impression of this wine is it's color: it looks like a cherry jolly rancher candy. Intense translucent red. On the PnP, a burst of strawberry and cherry jolly rancher candy on the nose. On the palate, cranberry and melon. Very slight tannins give a nice backbone. Beautifully acidic and slightly off-dry sing in perfect harmony. This wine is balanced, and is a a joy to drink. Leaves you wanting for more.

  • Now it seems ready. The hint of unbalance is gone- was it bottle shock? Exceptional rose.

  • No detailed notes, but this is really, really good. The color is like gorgeous maraschino cherry juice. The nose and palate reflected more raspberry, stawberry and watermelon, with a good acidic core and notable smooth tannins to support the flavor. There was also a bit of residual sugar, making the wine very slightly off-dry. It was an amazing match with citrus-brined chicken and fennel-cumin risotto. My guests went through it in no time, leaving me very glad that I have a couple bottles still in the cooler. It very much lives up to the rather expensive (for rosé) price point of $21, delivered. Delicious.

  • Delicious. Strawberry soda, cherry juice, flowers, and grapefruit on the nose. Strawberry and grapefruit rind on the palate. Big flavors and lots of body for a rose. Very good balancing acidity. Seems perfect for the 4th of July.

  • Popped and poured, and consumed by myself over 4 hours. Awesome, and the best domestic rose I can remember ever having! Keep up the great work Dave! Look forward to a case of this for the summer! Awesome...especially considering these just arrived yesterday! Same notes as previous. Crisp, refreshing, and delish!

  • learned my lesson from my first bottle and kept my paws off a glass until it had sat open for 40 minutes....much more enjoyable

  • Consistent with previous notes. Just an utterly delicious wine to drink. The acid is what keeps this wine interesting on the palate and serving the wine with a good chill on it did nothing to mute the nose or palate on this wine.

  • Had the pleasure of tasting this at a Wine Library Forum offline on 30 April 2011. Special thanks to board member Sheila F for bringing this along. I have seen the notes on this wine on the board, and the much praise that it received. After having it, I am a HUGE fan, and I immediately placed an order for a case. Special thanks to owner and winemaker Dave for digging deep into his cellar to fill my order. Crazy, gorgeous, vibrant pink neon red color in the glass! I absolutely love the shade of Rosé like this, but that was not the true beauty of this wine. On the nose, some great watermelon notes dominated for me, with hints of strawberry, and Pal bubble gum. The nose was rounded out by some great floral notes of lavender and rose petal, and it was so spring, and so refreshing! On the palate, this wine was amazing, and different from many I have enjoyed, or not enjoyed. It wasn’t your typical rosé, it wasn’t a Provence styled rosé, but it was delicious! The first thing you notice is just the right amount of acidity. Some fresh cherry, cranberry, grapefruit, and strawberry on the palate, with just a hint of watermelon again. This wine is so refreshing, and would be great as the evening cools down after a hot summer day. The finish was medium and nothing out of the norm for a rosé. All in all, I cannot tell you how pleasantly surprised I was with this wine. I made it a point to try this as I’ve read about Dave’s wines on the Wineberserkers and Wine Library Forums, and I went out of my way to make sure I had a sip. This is the first Sangiovese based rosé I’ve heard of and tasted, and all I can say is that I am so glad I did, as this is going to be a great summer sipper! Kudos to Dave! Keep up the great work at Kaella! 90 points.

  • Light bright cherry nose with a trace of watermelon. Burst of sweet cherry on the attack, followed by excellent acidity, but the cherry keeps going through to the modest finish. There was a real hit of cranberry at the tail of the finish of this bottle.

  • The color of the wine is just crazy, bright candy apple red. Looks very pretty and appealing. On the nose it is a bit funky at first, although with time it did fade a bit and I was getting more citrus fruit starting to show. There is good acidity here and I'm getting the same citrus fruit play on the palate with maybe a hint of strawberry in there too on the finish, but there is a bit of alcohol that is noticeable. The finish definitely is leaving me wanting to keep taking another sip. Overall, a very good Rosé that I'm sure it will be great to sip on once the summer and higher temps come around.

  • Drank in a hotel room out of not so suitable glasses, so take the note for what it is. A little spritzy on the PnP with cranberries all over the nose along with some light melon. On the palate, there were similiar notes although this was definitely a bit hot. Had nice acidity and a medium finish. After letting it sit in the glass for 30 minutes or so, the alcohol was much less noticeable.

  • I think it needs a little time but drinks well now. Tart citrus, hints of watermelon, bold and beautiful stuff. Juicy fruity flavors fill the mouth but he acid balances it and cleanses the palate. Very nice!

  • PnP'd right out of the fridge....first of all, the color is crazy on this wine.....and, on it's own, makes you want to get to gluggin'. The nose, while initially muted, opened up nicely w/ melon & subtle ripe citrus notes. On the palate, I simply find this to have the "delicious factor" that makes you want to keep drinking. I get fresh stawberries and watermelon with just enough sweetness, but with ample acidity to maintain balance and crispness. Intially, it was quite cold as I drank it right out of the fridge......as it warmed, the flavors were really popping providing providing mouthcoating depth of flavor that I've not experienced w/ most Rose's. I did get a little heat on the back-end and should mention that I got quite a nice buzz from the half bottle I drank.....due in part, I assume, to how easily you can glug this down. 89 right now, but think this has the chops to get to 90 with a little time.

  • Wow. This was just off the charts delicious with a light cranberry and watermelon profile that was juicy, acidic, and fresh. Polished off a bottle on a cold night watching a movie at home, can't imagine how enjoyable this will be in the summer months!

  • Light bright cherry nose with a trace of watermelon. Burst of sweet cherry on the attack, followed by excellent acidity, but the cherry keeps going through to the modest finish. There is a hint of cranberry at the tail of the finish. 13.2%

  • Excellent
Little perfume on the nose along with candied cranberry and strawberry. Mouth-coating feel, juicy acidity, nice citrus notes along with summer melon fruit adds to this very nice drinking wine. Crisp finish leaves you wanting another sip/glass.

  • Dave Butner has made some great wines in his short career, and this sangiovese rose is another really excellent offering! I was very impressed with it.

Nose: I got hit with a faint and fleeting burst of cotton candy on opening the wine. This gave way to a big grapefruity citrus component and hints of watermelon rind. After an hour I started to get some apricot stone fruit on the nose, too.

Flavor: Very tart, very tight flavors, almost as if this wil take months yet to develop and open up fully. I get some heat from the alcohol and hints of cranberry, but the biggest flavor component was sour cherry. The tartness and acidity almost cover up the sweetness- I did not get a lot of sweetness at all. As it sat open I got even more of the sour fresh cherries than before and perhaps a good rhubarb component. There were some spicy hints I noted, too.

Overall Impresson: I think this may ned until summer to settle down, open up and get even better. Bold, tart, and interesting- ready to quaff or to serve with a nice summer grill menu. Salmon, chicken, and grilled pork would be complimented well with this. If it opens up a little more it will be a 90 point wine. deep pink color, reminds more of a French rose than a Washington wine. I can't say I've ever thought that of a Washington State wine.

  • Betz Family Winery - 1997-2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Retrospective (Russell's, Bothell, WA): Bright reddish-pink color. The nose had aromas of watermelon and raspberry. As we were talking about the wine, it was mentioned that someone had noticed a bubble gum aroma. I was able to notice a real faint trace of a bubble gum note at that point. It wasn't unpleasant or rubbery at all, and I thought it fit in well with the other aromas. The palate had very fresh and light red fruit and citrus flavors. I really enjoyed this Rosé.

  • Betz Pere de Famille Vertical Tasting (+more) (Bothell): I don't drink a lot of rose; usually I give it a go every summer, only to get disappointed by the lack of flavor and go right back to loire valley whites. This rose, however, packed a delightful little punch.
nose: a little funky, mostly juicy, with some metal nuance
palate: a little sweet, but very tasty. Lots of flavor and some watermelon rind to complement the other melon flavors. Nice job, Dave!

  • Vibrant pink color, on the darker side compared to some rose I have had. The nose was pure watermelon jolly rancher candy with some strawberry notes coming through as well. I was afraid it would be too candied on the palate based on the nose but it is not. Great acidity and balanced red fruit and citrus flavors lead to a crisp, mouth watering experience and the wine finishes clean and long. Really well done and I look forward to drinking this wine over the course of the summer. Kudos Dave!

  • Northern NJ/NY Offline (Cafe Monet - Millburn, NJ): Had the pleasure of drinking this with the wine maker Dave Butner at the Wine Library. This was the first time I recalled drinking a rose of Sangiovese, so I really didn't know what to expect. The nose is refreshing with strawberries, and spiced watermelon. The palate was densely packed with more strawberry, watermelon and some herbs. Should complement the hot D.C. summer well.
