Clos Vougeot Tasting (Chicago): This is now past peak as the fruit is thinning out and the wood is prominent in both flavor (vanilla) and structure (coarse wood tannin). Dry finish.

Clos Vougeot Virtual Tasting (Planet Earth): Fully mature red fruit with woodsy spice and still showing a bit of new oak not fully integrated. Clearly Grand Cru density. I liked this much more when younger.

Popped to taste, very tight a little angular. Decanted for an hour, some fruit started to show, but not much enjoyment here. Will hold for 5 years before trying again.

Dark ruby, complex nose of brown sugar, macerated cherries, licorice, camphor, with hints of violets and earth, tart and dark on the attack with spicy black and red fruit extract, mocha and floral notes, finish is long, sweet and layered
Note: Long life ahead

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Tasted double blind. Red fruit with lots of meaty spice. Very good lean red flavors, some earth starting to emerge, well textured. Tasted blind, I thought this a 2001 Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin. A very pleasant surprise when unveiled.

This offers up lovely fresh ripe black cherry and a heady nose of mushroom, herbs and earth. The oak is very restained staying nicely balanced from front to end. Very fine sweet tannins. Not a big wine but a perfect complement to the Coq au Vin with potato lyonnaise and roasted green beans. Very happy to have this in the cellar.

Funky nose. Palate was quite different with some dark fruit, some brett - not bad, but not great. We drank this with a clean and pure 2002 Drouhin CV and then a Mongeard Mugneret and they each bested the Boillot.

Colour - Deep garnet red. Aroma - Subtle oak, dry herbs, sage, sweet, red and black berries, white mushrooms, earth and truffles. Palate - Elegance and complexity with power. A sweet entry immediately followed by an explosive and rich mid-palate, lovely fine velvety tannic structure and very long lifting finish.

A touch understated, but really delicious. Ready to drink now and over the next few years.

Much cleaner and better than the one last month. Earthy with raspberries and good acidity. Nice wine.
