Needs a bit of air still. Opens up to raspberry, cherry and spice. Good acidity makes this a fine food wine. Tannins have softened although by the end of the bottle things have firmed up again.

13% alcohol. Good cork, not that dense but with good elasticity. The colour is translucent ruby, pretty attractive. The nose is reticent until late in the meal, when undergrowth emerges from the wild red berries; plenty of zip in the mouth with commendable purity of fruit. Acidity dominates unduly in the finish. Taste-wise, this bottle belongs to the same world as Fleurie, price-wise, it is in a different universe altogether; as a result, the (non) repurchasing decision is obvious.

Interesting compared with other notes. Needed about 30 min to open up, and that was enough. Mature, balanced. Open and accessible with good fruit and solid soft tannins. Dark cherry and smoke. Long finish.

Right, raspberry, cherry, smoke and spice. Wonderful flavors although still very firm and tannic. Opening up since 3 years ago, but still really needs more years. Hold.

Medium bright red. Good perfume of raspberry, cherry, spice. Same flavors, with nice lift and acid. Still young, tannins still present, but drinking well now with aeration. A bit short on finish, but I think that is mostly due to remaining tannins that still need to resolve. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and could have drunk more than my half of the bottle, but I will likely wait another couple years to get the most out of this. Pretty wine.

A ripe example of Volnay but overall good. Raspberry liqueur, ripe cherry, rose, and some mineral hints. The palate is ripe yet still elegant and balanced. A good village wine that is quite enjoyable but has time to improve.

This was excellent, even at its early stage of evolution. Filled with cool, mineral laden dark cherry fruit, potpourri, spice, and dried herbs. Medium bodied with energetic acidity and a persistent, vibrant finish. Delicious now, with a long life ahead. Drink (with air) or Hold.
Drank an overpriced half bottle at McCrady's in Charleston but enjoyed the pants off it all the same. Good to go with a short decant, it was the full package, from the giving nose to the focused flavors and acidity. Earth, tart red fruit, light cream, good finish. I don't necessarily agree that it requires food but it's an adroit companion for sure. We had chicken and lamb and it handled the pairings with no effort.

Bastille Day Tastings-Mostly French (San Francisco): Medium ruby. Ripe, full, forward aromatics that are all 2009. Sappy but simple, and very little detail provided by acidity. There is some earth and complexity at the end, but not enough to salvage this wine. Ironically, this is the most outsized of the 3 village wines in the line up, and that just ain't right for a Volnay. In fairness, I had a very different impression when I noted this late last year, but that's how it showed today.

Very tight when opened but mellowed wonderfully with about an hour of decanting. Paired with grilled salmon, risotto and baked asparagus. Very definitely a food wine.

Volnay with Luis Gutierrez (Enoteca Barolo - Madrid): Young cherry colour. Hyperfloral, meaty, nobile woods (little woody), graphite, an incredible effort fo a V.V. Elegant and seductive bottle wonderfully open becoming from 09. I am happy cause have another example in my cellar. Mouthfeel is ample, solid but a little alcoholic.
Color cereza joven.

beautiful floral rich nose with loads of red fruit and cassis. On the palate remarkably approachable with silky rich palate feel. Nice deep raspberry/strawberry fruit with soft tannins. Long complex finish. Excellent balance. A baragin.

Spicy granite. Voluptuous. Meaty, curated, cherry marc. Scented. Filled with gnarled rootbeer. Stewed mint. Green cinnamon molasses. Rigid prow.

Sweet cherry. Smokey. Medium weight. A bit short. Needs a bit of a class to excel in the glass. Which it lacks. Still okay but not gee whiz.

Drinking beautifully after some decanting. Notes of black cherry, raspberry and strawberry. Smooth, fruit forward with some complexity on the finish.

This needs time in decanter to shine, but has lovely notes of cinnamon and red berries. Still young, but can drink now. No hurry

Some Lower End 2009 Red Burgundies (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Medium ruby. Faint fragrance of blackberry. Lean, focused with excellent acidity and structure. Austere finish. Proper Volnay but pretty strict at present.
