Nose: strawberry, red fruits, rose petals, black tea, spices, hints of smoke Notes: Drank after opening for 90 minutes. Domaine Leroy's signature nose is always explosive and extremely inviting, one would find it hard to resist the red fruits tangled with rose petals along with some darker notes such as black tea. The house style is quite apparent. This Genaivrieres is drinking very well now and the wine is fully mature, I don't think this will get any better with time. However, I would comment that most of the time Leroy wines perform better on the nose than the palate, this wine is no exception. Drink: now+ Rating: 93

It would have been a 100 had the mouth be as impressive as the nose. Overall a killer wine. Evanescent essence of Pinot Noir. I can't believe this is "just a Village". But rules are different at Domaine Leroy...

Pure, succulent, sous bois with lengthy savory finish. "You could drink yourself sober with this" was the comment from the crowd. Could go longer I thought, but why bother? Beautiful.

Slide!! (Waterford Wine Co., Milwaukee): open 5 hours. color shows much more dark brown. a root beer in the rim. what grand cru wine have i noticed this premature browning in recently. a very singluar note of soft and present wood in the nose. quite woodsy really, but done in a subtle wafty way. black hole of color in the core of the wine. medium+ palate. woodsy palate. medium- tannin. very pleasurable.

Tasting Group Dinner - Cheval Blanc at Heidi's (Heidi's, Minneapolis): It was tough to change gears from Cheval to Burgundy. I've had this many times, and this bottle was consistent with the others. Great nose of sour cherries and earth. The palate is ripe and expressive, showing concentrated sour cherry flavors framed by nice supporting minerality and acidity. Fun stuff.

Cheval at Heidi's: Popped and poured. The nose is a light reddish orange. The nose gives an intense expression of red cherry, mushroom, pepper and soy sauce. Fun, but relatively straightforward. In the mouth this is light bodied and clean with nice flavors of cherry and cranberry with just enough earth/mushroom. This is elegant but comes acress a bit thin/light. Nice finish. This is a great bottle of wine, but lacks a bit in depth and complexity needed to make it a true "wow."

Christmas Eve dinner with family. Consistent with prior bottles. Beautiful ripe fruit, earth, spice, and a hint of black truffle. Pure dark cherries and minerals. Medium weight. Medium finish. On the ripe end of the Burgundy spectrum, but wonderfully balanced and textured. Delicious.

Opened two bottles over an extended family dinner of roast chicken. Maroon with moderate amber at the rim. High-toned, effervescent nose of rhubarb, cassis, and baking spices. On the palate, this is light- to medium-bodied, with moderately concentrated red fruits (rhubarb!) and spice, additional tea leaf flavors, and light tannins on the finish. The nose is denser and more complex than the palate. Like the bottle tasted last November, this improved and put on weight in the glass. Not a blockbuster Leroy, but still quite fun.

Tasting Group Dinner - Northern Rhone and Burgundy (Fugaise, Minneapolis): A bonus bottle after our flight of Northern Rhones. It was tough to re-adjust my palate back to Burgundy after the 1999 Clape Cornas and dessert (an intense chocolate cake). Lush red fruits, earth/tobacco, in a nicely balanced frame. Put on weight and gained complexity with time in the glass, growing more tasty with each sip. I look forward to re-tasting this.

Minneapolis Does Burgundy and N. Rhone (DRC, Leroy, Mugnier, Dujac, Chave, Chapelle, Chapoutier, Clape): Opened after dessert. An excellent bottle of wine. The color is a light red/orange. The nose is intense -- offering aromas of red cherry, earth, and spice in an uplifting style. In the mouth this is light bodied and clean but extremely flavorful -- giving candied red fruit and floral notes . Good acidity keeps this lively in the mouth. Elegant, although probably a bit light on the palate. Decent length on the finish. An extremely uplifting wine to end the night on.

A beautiful bottle of wine. The color is a light red/orange. The nose is spectacular. Enticing aromas of black cherry and spice intermixed with floral notes. I can still smell it the next day. In the mouth this is light but mouth coating. Very elegant with plenty of fruit and spice. There is plenty of acidity to keep the wine lively in the mouth, and a nice long finish. This was the group's WOTN.

Explosive floral, stem-driven aromatics. Nice sweetness and balance on the palate as well. Quite the village... (400/2630)
