Was hoping to love this based on reviews. Bought at a liquor store so possible heat damage, but flavors seemed pretty muted. Limited cherry and dust flavors on the nose, red fruits and some tar on the palate. Not terribly complex, some tannins and moderate acid. Potential heat damage or may just be shut down, hard to say.

Probably the wine of the night last night, but now Day 2. Red cherry aromas. Palate shows some licorice, and tar. Medium, suave, chewy tannin. Really jamming today, as was yesterday. Maybe lacking that next level complexity. Although some orange zest comes through on the palate. Svelte, yet toned with a nice fruit expression. Drink to 2025 at least.

Thought we'd grab this for a pasta night, and it didn't disappoint! It's been cellaring long enough. The acidity is still there, the nose has lovely floral, tar, and spicy notes which all come together beautifully. Fine balance and fully integrated tannins. Just as a good nebbiolo should be! A bit of a pant dropper.

Excellent, in a great spot. Complex bouquet of woodsy aromas, violets, raspberries and the unquantifiable Nebbiolo varietal spice. Medium plus bodied, balance of upfront strawberry fruit and fresh acidity with spicy undertones. Pleasant subtle finish with a hint of balsamic. Tannins are ripe and integrated.
I should just always have these in the cellar rotation at the 5-10 year age mark. Good young and improve near/mid term.

Bottle #24 of 24. Goodbye old friend! Best bottle yet. Beautiful brown notes to the deep ruddy red. Great wafting nose of tar and roses, lots of earth, and balsamico. Palate shows the same. Indeed a baby Barolo, and one of the best values coming out of Italy.

love Perbacco, and this wine at age 9 is absolutely Nirvana, with silky smooth tannin, slight bricking around the edges, still impressive structure and fabulous acidity, violets and rose petals, very little tarry nuances and other complexities i honestly can't describe. This is a wonderful wine, probably with another 3-4 years to go. This is absolutely the best declassified Barolo anywhere.

Bottle #23 of 24. This was tight, austere and tannic on first opening, then gave way to more plush fruit as it warmed in glass over the first hour. Huge nose of shoe polish and roses, with hints of balsam, this is indeed a baby barolo. Quickly becoming very acidic though, even shrill at the two hour mark, and all these have been impeccably stored at 55 degrees since release. This bottle is on its last legs. Still delicious for a short bit, but time to drink up.

Bottle #22 of 24. Superb. Perfect peak right now. Best the second night, but still exceptional the first night. Focused, tight, deep, rich, ripe red and purple fruits, decent acidity, and moderate, noticeable dry and silky tannins. Classic ripe baby barolo. For the tariff, affordable Nebbiolo doesn't get much better. No hint of drying, fading, oxidation or cracking up on the second evening (after a day in cellar under cork in bottle), yet no gain either. Time to go for these.

Delicious and consistent with previous notes for the first evening, though still a little tight, a bit flat, not singing yet - just needing time to unfurl. Then, the next evening, the second half of the bottle had already begun to oxidize in a way that I rarely see. This was kept under cork at cellar temp, and I've been doing this with my wines for 25 years, and hardly ever see this. To me, this indicates either a strange outlier bottle, or this is beginning its downhill slide. I have another half case, so time will tell. If this is representative, I'd say drink the bottle in one sitting, after decanting for an hour.

Vietti Perbacco Vertical: 2005-2011 (My place, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is very perfumed and high-toned with red fruits, fresh picked red berries, roasted herbs, roses, and wild flowers. There is a feminine and airy quality to the nose that is quite attractive.
Taste: Medium bodied with medium/high acidity and silky tannins. There is noticeable structure, but it isn't overpowering. The feel is deft with red fruits, earth tones, fresh picked red berries, and wild flowers. The feel is pretty, but there is a lacking on the mid-palate that is disappointing.
Overall: This is a pretty Perbacco. It is lacking slightly on the palate, but that doesn't take away from the higher-toned and attractive nature to it.

Best bottle yet. From the second source, so concerns off the table for this batch as well, though this was so delicious it was quickly quaffed. Tannins fully integrated, this is complex, long and delicious, with a beautifully full and rich mid-palate, yet shows great elegance and style. Superb now, and for another 5 to 7 years would be my guess.

Dark red. Faint cherry, tar, floral, menthol, sandalwood. Lush, but not overripe cherry, some spice, wave of red fruit on the finish. Medium body, grippy, unobtrusive tannins and well honed acidity. Superb QPR.

from Magnum. Nicely balanced with fruit slightly fading, wood well integrated, plenty of acidity for food. This will not become special with more time and might actually go downhill before too long, but really a nice, drinkable, likeable big bottle to put on the table at a dinner party. Should hold up for a few more years at least.
Paired with a ragu brimming with meat balls and sausage - went very nicely. Wouldn't pair with lighter fare - this wine needs some umami in the food to bridge. It would drink really well with a grilled sirloin.

New case from a different source. This is softer, with the same delicious classic 08 baby barolo flavor profile. Slightly more advanced color it seems, maybe these were stored more warmly than my first batch since release at 53-55F - some deepening in the meniscus and some very slight ambering at the rim. This retains the tarry shoe polish and roses aroma I love so much, and which seems reticent at first, but then blossoms with warming to show those pine resin and wonderful spice notes. Stylish and not insignificant fine grained tannins, along with perfect acidity, lend structure to the beautifully ripe fruit. Yup, this is 08 Perbacco. Such a winner, and especially for the price, this has to be up there for the QPR of the year, and has at least a decade of enjoyment ahead of it. 91pts pure quality, 93pts personal preference.

Very nice balance of fruit and structure. Some significant earthiness, and this will go for years. My go-to house red, the acid/tannin profile makes this very food friendly, so what's not to like for $25? Just uploaded another case. Yum.

This is coming around nicely. Tannins integrating (though still quite present - especially after an hour of air) and the ripe, detailed, mostly primary baby barolo fruits are still singing. Notes of shoe polish, warm fennel, pine sap, and potpourri - even some sandalwood or cinnamon - this is spectacular and especially for the price. I'd say just starting its peak and so glad I have 8 more bottles. I've been experimenting with various Bourgognes as a basic house red, and none even come close to touching this. 90pts pure quality, 93pts personal preference.

Nice fragrant nose, but very tight and somewhat muddled on the palate. The tannins definitely softened with time but were always present and early on overpowering. The wine definitely improves with food (meat ravioli in a marinara sauce) by bringing some clarity to the profile and softening the tannis. I'm hopeful some additional bottle time will help and don't plan on opening my second bottle for at least two more years.

Tasted over 2 days. Had with Osso Buco on Day 1. Fragrant nose. Red fruits, earth, leather. Tannins smoothed with time, but this wine needs food. I did taste some underlying complexity. Given the Vietti name, I had higher hopes for this bottle. Maybe this would've been better with some more aging.

Good color. The nose is fragrant and complex, displaying scents of cherry, raspberry, underbrush, flowers, cedar, and a hint of mineral. This is medium full bodied on the palate, with a wonderful texture and very good concentration. There is a lovely finesse here, and the acidity is bright and refreshing. The long finish has well integrated tannins. What a Value!

Strawberry on the nose with soft silky tannins. Really pulling the sour cherry on the finish with bitter unripe fruit. The nose really opened up after a few hrs in the decanter but I was left wanting more. I personally do not find this complex & rather muted & unopen. As I stated earlier it developed a very nice nose with floral undertones but I was left unsatisfied. My personal opinion that's all. Again I'm not Bobby Parker Jr.

wow. the balance here is incredible. silky and smooth on the palate. tasted this with the Vietti folks a few months ago and I remember them mention that the Perbacco is essentially declassfied Barolo or rather Nebbiolo from the Barolo zone. this has gained some weight but still primary and tightly wound. nice fruity cherry and floral perfume with matching palate. will only get better with time. at this qpr, i will seek out more bottles.

Loved the floral notes that mingled on the nose and palate. If you're frustrated, as I am, with the aging arc of most Baroli - this is always a great cuvee to drink in the short term. Sure it doesn't have the tertiary tobacco, dried floral notes that aged nebbiolo develops, but I find it hard to resist.

This is essentially declassified Barolo (no fruit from marginal regions like Roero). Medium ruby garnet with slight brighing on the rim. NOse of Rosemary, stewed cherries, tomato leaf, rose petal and pepper. Powerful acidity and tannin. But, the tannin is relatively silky, making this quite approachable. Medium body with decent length on the palate. Not too complicated, but then again, it's not meant to be. Good stuff.

A second tasting. The wine is a clear, pale garnet with a clean nose of medium intensity. This shows loads of liquorice, red plums, prunes, mushroom and some forest floor. The palate reveals a dry wine with high acid and tannins and a full body displaying red plum, pepper, clove, nutmeg, sweet tobacco, and a slight smokiness. This has a long finish and is a very good nebbiolo.

Excellent +

Brilliant dark ruby in color. Initially the nose is a bit tight, displaying minerals, herbs, and cherry. After a while, the nose opens to show sweeter red fruits, earth, minerals, and a floral note. This is medium bodied on the palate, with good fruit and nice structure. This wine displays good finesse, with high acidity and slightly drying tannins. Medium plus length on the finish.

Taste typically Barolo, and it is. Vietti could legally sell this as a Barolo but choose not to.
Fresh but oaky nose. Elegant and promising but doesn't reveal much about the taste.
The taste is typically Barolo but with some sourly fruits and leather. The tannins are quite gentle and this wine is ready to drink at this age. I prefer this wine over many wines labeled as DOCG Barolo.

This is a very good and affordable nebbiolo. The nose is active with hay, hazelnut, raisins, and currants coming on strong. The palate shows clove and nutmeg, too. This is full-bodied with high acidity, high tannins, and a long finish.

Really like this. No formal notes, but the tannic spine of this, beginning to be accessible even now, is a thing of beauty. Love the dry finish and the bitter, earthy fruits. Not the depth of a more prestigious bottling, this is a very delicious baby barolo, and a nice intro to the Vietti style.

With A and Z at Spinasse. Had this at a restaurant where we needed it to pair with six different dishes, and it paired very well. Mix of strawberry, cherry, leather, and flower petal, brambles. On the palate, earthy, a bit of saline, roast herbs, solid acidity, and mild tannin.

A bit shy on the nose with aromas of strawberries and black cherries. A touch of dried roses, liquorice, meat, graphite and elegant chocolaty oak. Medium bodied palate with mid-intense fruit, a good grip of ripe tannins and refreshing acidity. Substantial dusty cedar, plentiful liquorice, raspberry pips, herbs and a hint of coffee towards the mid-length finish. Very pleasent and promising, but still comes across a bit muted. Needs just more time probably. Better on day2 and still good on day5 with dried rose, tar and liquorice notes coming way more pronounced.

nose: pretty and elegant nose of strawberries, tar, red florals, all sorts of roasted herbs and a good bit of red fruits. Lovely depth with a more feminine take on the nose
taste: silky and lovely medium feel on the palate with good medium/high acidity and noticeable tannins along with fresh and pretty tones of strawberries, red fruits, roasted herbs and some bits of red florals
overall: quite good from pop n pour and gains some weight with air. I like the freshness of flavors this brings along with some very good acidity and classic tones. This could use a bit of time, but isn't as structured as the 06 and isn't as flush as the 07. That said, its still a lovely perbacco and could use a bit of age to add some weight on the palate

The nose had aromas of tart cherries, dried roses, and herbs. The palate had mixed berry and plum flavors with dusty earth and mocha notes. Good mouthfeel, but not a very long finish. I would have liked to have had some tarry flavors in here, but maybe they will come out with more time.

Different source, and better than the last bottle - same profile, but very elegant and no sign of oxidation as the bottle sat over a few days. Stellar, and concerns off the table for this batch. Drink the other batch first.

I prefer this wine over many wines labeled as DOCG Barolo.

nose: pretty and elegant nose of strawberries, tar, red florals, all sorts of roasted herbs and a good bit of red fruits.
