This is lovely right now. Not much to add to my last note, from which this wine has not changed that much. Perhaps slightly more intense secondary flavors and aromas...

Pop and pour. Just a beautiful mature Hermitage. Fantastic nose with dark black fruit and loads of char, black olive and great salinity. Fantastic acidity and attenuated tannin on the dark finish. Yum.

Pop and pour, though probably needed a decant, also wasn't the best pairing for my main. Nevertheless, nice nose with smoke, black fruit and charred meat. I didn't find the oak obtrusive, but is definitely present. On the palate, good acidity and loads of charcoal and black cherry liqueur. Soft tannin on the finish, and this bottle improved a lot with air. Wait for a while on next btl, but drinking vety well with some air already.

Decanted and consumed over four hours. Occasional flashes of - not brilliance, exactly, but better than mediocrity - but otherwise quite ordinary. May need more time.

Medium red(+), somewhat opaque, just a little faded at the edge. Nose with ripe blackberries and dark plums, strong animal notes with blood and meat juices, plus some barnyard aromas, leather and charcuteries, some rusted iron, cloves and some spice notes, a hint of violets, and a bit of oak and vanilla. A somewhat developed nose, but still many aromas on the young side (cloves!). Medium bodied+ to full bodied, palate with good concentration of fruit and rather tart berry aromas including dark cherries, blackberries and cranberries, quite good acidity, quite a lot of spice, medium(+) tannins, and an aftertaste with berries and tannin, some of which feel a bit like oak tannins. Rather fully developed, but no rush to drink up, and the oak notes could perhaps integrate a little better with more cellaring. 92 p. A fine wine that is currently at that point where it will be appealing both to those who prefer young wines and those who prefer mature wines, but to be perfectly honest, the oak is a bit overdone which means that it comes across as less elegant and silky than an optimal Hermitage can be.

Granato scurissimo. Al naso il frutto scuro (amarena) si accompagna subito a sensazioni più elusive di tapenade, viola fresca, menta, cacao, pepe nero, note ematiche, spezie. Bocca secca, opulenta, giovanile; tannino di esemplare integrità

Opened and tasted. Mute.
Decanted. Flat and perfectly uninterresting.
Will end up tomorrow in a beef cheek ragout.

Bordeaux "en Primeur" Tasting and Rhone side visit; 3/29/2004-4/2/2004 (France): Tasting at winery. First vintage for this wine not being produced just from the lieu-dit. Reductive to start and tough to assess, with a somewhat unfriendly character today. Not accessible with some coarse edges I didn't really enjoy.
