  • Super fine. Bright cherry but so clean and fresh. As Andy notes the balance is just wonderful, hand in hand. Mouthwatering. "The acidity dominates the finish, like its balsamic vinegar" and this is meant in a good way. This one is smooth as silk.

  • Quite good. Still very vibrant acidity but with air it rounds out. Certainly a food wine but delightful with delicate porcini, dusty earth, soft dried red fruits. Still love this one.

  • I love traditional style aged Rioja and also this producer, but I couldn't bring myself to enjoy this wine. It is simply faded and void of life, with a water-like mouthfeel and only acid, but no fruit, on the palate. I believe the bottle is flawed.

  • Medium red, faded edges. Fabulous nose, complex and almost indescribable. A touch of VA, graphite, and black fruit in a delicate package with fierce acidity. I will try the rest of this bottle tomorrow. On the first night, the aromatics are far ahead of the palate impression, which is somewhat severe and dominated by the strong acidity. I bet this will soften beautifully, but we'll find out tomorrow.

And after a night in the refrigerator-Now more VA shows and gives the wine a very Italianate profile. For a moment, the fruit seems warmer and more generous, but this is fleeting. What really happens is that the wine seems thinner, more astringent, and overwhelmed by prickly VA. I never expect Lopez de Heredia to be big wine, but this takes leanness to an uncacceptable level. Bottle or bad vintage for this reliable wine? And then, at the very end, some nicer, spicy strawberries poked through. OK, I'll admit it-I'm confused about this one, but wouldn't rush to buy or taste another bottle.

  • Great showing - incredible aromatics. Still a bit clenched and tart on the palate, best with food.

  • Earthy and complex. Round and rich rotting wood, truffles, sour cherries on the nose. Elegant on the palate, enjoy with food. Drinking well now and for a few years at least I would think.

  • Earthy and food friendly. Liked it better than the Muga Riserva. Drink now.

  • Yum. Lots of aroma going on here. There is some cherry with earth, mushroom, tobacco, game. The flavor profile is surprisingly bold and rich, compared to say 1998, with solid tannins and acidity. This is so well balanced and everything you could want in a mid-priced wine. Great value. Drink it now or hold it for years to come.

  • Drank with pizza. Light-bodied, dark and earthy. Quite smoky with camphor notes. Some herbs including rosemary. Fruit (strawberry, raspberry. red currant) was somewhat overwhelmed by the secondary flavors. CW found it a little thin, and a little tart, though the complexity was pleasing.

  • Beautiful garnet, sexy and masculine nose of earth, sweet strawberries and rhubarb, some rustic farmy notes and a bit of a steely character. Palate delivers with a pure medium bodied load of sweet fruit and earth. Finsihes with admirable length. Beautiful traditional Rioja drinking great now with potential for even a bit more upside over the next 5-10 years. Delicious and a stunning value at < $30.

  • Fragrant berry nose shows great promise, but initial taste was a bit of a letdown - tangy without much structure at first. Light-bodied, with color to match. After 45 mins, aromas give way to reveal notes of caramel and almost a sweet curry. Taste of tree bark-like earthiness starts to show through, and the complexity is making this wine better.

At an hour and fifteen, the nose is still gorgeous. This is smooth, not very tannic, the dark notes are starting to show through a bit more. Good traditional rioja, but it does feel a bit thin in this age of big wines. Very nice change of pace nonetheless.

  • Delicious aroma, a touch of gaminess at first, then well-integrated oak. Fresh, tangy, amazing how young this tastes with lots of cranberry tartness...will be better with a few more years...2nd bottle 5/7/07, was quite ready to drink.

  • Nice leathery and pokeberry juice nose. Light body, definite wood present, good acids and smooth texture. Very rough on the edges. Good finish, a bit short, but nice elements of cranberry, almond and earth. Good balance of basics. Very young and will sort out. Definitely enjoyable with roasted chicken.

  • This is what Old World wine is all about. When I first poured the brick-colored juice, it released a promising earthy scent that soon went into hiding. For the first glass it combined mellow, wooded fruit and bold tannins and seemed a textbook Rioja, a decent one but not terribly distinctive. It pairs well with New Zealand rack of lamb and basmati rice. With a little air--wow. Swirling coaxes out an array of aromas including mushroom, game, and cigars, and the mouthfeel is much smoother. The fruit tastes mature and contains some of that cigar character but doesn't (yet) display the flavors hinted at by the scent. The tannins are still very assertive, especially on the finish, but don't get in the way. I had plans tonight but I think I'm going to stay in and finish this. It's raining anyway.

  • Very burgundian styled rioja. Light ruby in color. Sour cherries and strawberries on the palate. A touch funky. Some oak present but not in the foreground. Tannins are somewhat aggressive at first but then mellow out. Over time some blackberry emerges. I liked this much better after being aerated for a couple of hours.

  • Leather, nut, orange rind, apple skin, black tea, and dried cherries on the nose. Medium bodied with a complex, leathery, mature palate. Long finish.
