Friday Walk Around Tasting at Sams Fine Wine & Spirits, Lexington SC 8/29/2014 (Sams Fine Wines & Spirits, Lexington, SC): Even though this is a 2010 which is still relatively young, this one tastes like a wine that has been aged for quite a while. It is already browning a little on the color. The nose has some earthy rusticity, and maybe even a touch of oxidation, befoe some candied cherry fruit. When it first hits the lips, (we were not able to decant) it tastes a little shop worn, but just give it a second, and there is an explosion of well matured maraschino and dark cherry with black fruit, red licorice, wet earth, mionerals and graphite. Medium plus bodied with a very lingering mature fruit flavor on the roof of the mouth. Probably caught it just in time. Sneaky little tannins. The cherry finish lasts for minutes.

Liked it a bit better than the last bottle. Similar profile but this time I get a cherry note in the early palate with an interesting transition to filling the back of the palate.

Transparent ruby with some burnt orange towards the edges. Nose of earth, smoke, dusty cedar cabinet, and the slightest hint of green pepper. Bright cherry and red plum on the palate, along with black pepper and mineral on the back end. Medium- body, medium+ acid, and marked mineral on the medium finish. Lighter, fruity style that strikes me as a blend of gamay and grenache. Interesting, but I'd like this <$15, preferably closer to $10. 100% piedirosso. Good with red sauce.

A good easy drinker. Light to medium body. Fruity on the nose. Slight oak. A touch acidic but gentle & smooth. Just missing complexity and a longer finish.

Pine and old vegetables on nose - a bit funky. Big with lots of fruit. Not particularly complex. Sharp at first but softened with time open. Not bad but not as good as an earlier one I tried.

Black pepper, smoke and wood on the nose. 100% Piedarosso. Hmpf! I always thought these were 100% Aglianico. I have been lying all this time. Very fresh, a bit four square. Just ok at $19.99.

Bleh. Tastes old. I didn't like it at all. Down the drain after a glass. A waste of $25!

We were impressed by this wine. Medium to full-bodied. Tannins had resolve. Substantial fruit but nice balance between acidity and fruit.

Soft and approachable, fullish fruit, some vegetal funk, touch of smoky oak .
