This is till young and needed 2-4 hours to open up. A decant is therefore advisable. On the ligther side, quite elegant, with fresh fruit and a tannic bite. Reminded me a little bit of the elegance and lightness of the 2005. Stored perfectly since release.

45th Birthday Celebration (Racquet Club - Chicago IL): Late night, small glass, brief note. Popped-and-poured. Still ripe and powerful black fruit, coming across as slightly older than a few other bottles from the same cellar in recent years. Mostly clean with a bit of must from its age and Cab Franc barnyard, but not distracting. Alongside Figeac 1985, I preferred this Cheval, but most others disagreed.

I have never been a fan of concentrated, modern-styled Bordeaux and preferred the classic Bordeaux. However the 1976 Cheval Blanc was diluted and dull, very unusual as I rarely find Bordeaux truly ‘diluted’. This 1976 Cheval Blanc is fully matured and offers a savoury nose of forest floor, black tea, earthy mushroom, ultraripe fruits fading away. Fully developed but not complex. Drink up. (84/100)

A Birthday Celebration (Taste 222 - Chicago IL): Dense black fruit with both savory and sweet spice, with good power and follow-through. Perhaps slightly dirty, but not in a distracting way.

Bought at a UK auction. Level into neck. Cork was extracted easily and in good condition. Slight bricking but still vibrant color. Explosive tertiary aromas of autumnal forest, hawthorn berry and pu 'er tea. Very refined mouthfeel. well balanced and still has plenty of fruit. Moderately intense mid-palate and good length. Very elegant wine, Burgundian in character and delicious. A big surprise given the vintage and critic scores.

A 40th Birthday Celebration (River North, Chicago IL): Small glass, brief note. Ripe black fruit that was very fresh for its age and the vintage. Very dense, balanced and long. My favorite 1976 Bordeaux of the day.

St Emillion First Growths (Chez Bruce, London): Deep full garnet. Lovely nose, gently autumnal. Gorgeous on the palate. There's a sweetness to the fruit. Nuanced, mellow and with a vibrancy too. Long and glorious. Just spot-on. *****

Base of neck. Deep ruby with bricking rim. Dusty nose with tobacco and cedar. Good depth, length and interest, but somewhat drying and lacking in fruit. Quality for the vintage, but this was nowhere near the '78 we had a couple of years ago. Drink now, although I can't see this dropping off the cliff any time soon. (91 Very good wine)

Older Bordeaux Evening with Friends (Les Nomades - Chicago IL): Base neck fill. Ripe fruit throughout, slightly sweet, nicely fresh. I like the concentration best here, with moderate acidity, length and nuance, but certainly a star for the vintage.

Wonderful condition - flawless. Fully integrated, some fruit, small amount of cedar / oak, small amount of barnyard. Maybe it needs something a little more distinct to be a 100 for me? Or should a wine with absolutely no flaws be 100. It was a joy to contemplate. :)

Cheval Blanc Vertical Tasting (Old Swiss House, Lucerne, Switzerland): Clear red with brick color at the edges. Ripe red notes (figs and raspberries). Nice sweetness, floral notes and good length. Acidity is a bit too high. Overall still a nicely balanced wine with a solid backbone. For sure one of the better 1976s. For people born that year (such as me) a good buy especially when found in large formats, as the 0.75 are already quite mature.

Perfect looking bottle with a fill well into the neck. Cork came out easily. Outstanding nose of mature red and black fruit, violets, herbs and earth. Soft, fully open and beautiful on the palate. The violet and floral notes really came out with time. Wonderful ripeness. Medium++ finish. Perfect right now. Glad I have 23 more bottles....

Complex and balance, a young lady at the beginning, elegant, good shape. Red fruit, berry, cherry, plum, sweet.... After an hour, herb, vanilla, cedar, cigar box, smooth tannin, medium minus acidity and good finish

Chicago Rotating Host Wine Dinner Series - May 2013 (RPM Italian - Chicago, IL): Tasted blindly. Felt good asserting that this was from Bordeaux, but I was thinking Graves, not St. Emilion. Wonderfully aged Bordeaux nose that's truly hypnotic. Dried leaves, tobacco, cedar, red and dark fruits, leather, and earth. The cabernet franc greenness wasn't overtly noticeable here, but it did had a fresh pea note to the nose with some air. The palate was in a great spot. Some '76s can be a big cloying given the heat of the vintage, but this was firm, trim and fresh. Impressive bottle.

Very cedary, layered, complex - cassis and blackcurrant. Very smooth, seamless; very integrated, fine tannins. Slightly earthy element. Beautiful bottle of wine. Thank you again, Bob.

Great level and despite initial concerns as bottom sliver of cork popped down into bottle, drank very nicely as hoped. Improved with a little time in the glass. Did not decant.
