2007 Tolo Cellars Merlot

  • Decanted ~1 1/2 hours, consumed over 2 hours. Intense, somewhat porty merlot, with rich stewed red fruits, ample (bordering on harsh) acidity, and a little heat on the long finish. Huge merlot, dense, spicy, overpowering. Somehow I want to say that this is both better than and not as good as the note may make it sound.

  • Not decanted, consumed over ~1 hour. Intense on the palate, kirschy fruit with a bit of peppery spice and a whiff of something like toffee. Ample acids and unobtrusive tannins. This started out fairly closed but slowly opened up...it deserved more time than I gave it.

(I should really just stop opening Tolo wines when I don't have a decanter handy and/or multiple hours to wait - the end of the bottle is pretty much always the best, regardless of how long it's been open.)
