WOW! Picked up for $11.00 in the likely over the hill section. It opened with deeply stewed fruit and the aged nose I expected but as it opened up it was fantastic! The funk blew off and mature but less stewed red fruits and tuscan soil contributions came to the front and it got an interesting lanolin element on the palate. Definitely drink sooner rather than later but those liking a more aged style will not be disappointed.

Athens Wine Event; 4/7/2012-4/8/2012 (Athens, Greece): Blind tasted. Very modern, lots of extraction and density. Sweet oaky core running throughout this wine. ( With hindsight these are textbook Galatrona features , see our dinner with Luca Sanjust). Lots of presence but the oak once again takes so much away in complexity and makes a wine with little vintage variation. 90 but can easily last 10yrs more

Not so made in Italy (The Papies, Elizabeth St, London): Decanted for 2 hours. Impressive from the start but certainly benefitted for decanting. Darrk, desne in colour at this stage. Open, dark fruits and oak notes on the nose.Modern style, Big, well made wine but the tannns are fully integrated and very enjoyable at the moment.Still very much alive and this can last another 10yrs easily. Suffers a bit from the (over?)oaked red syndrome where the complexity gets ironed out and borders on merlot overextraction so typical these days in right bank bdx and US wines. We liked but this is nowhere near the other 100% merlots from Italy. 90-91

Two bottles tested. This is not an outstanding wine in my opinion. Typical "alcoholic fruit in a wooden box" wine, without any sense of terroir or complexity. The alcohol shines through in both nose and taste. Amazingly young though for being a 2000. Good enough for any BBQ, and worth 85 p.

Decanted 1 hour, consumed over next 4. Seemed tight and tannic unlike previous encounters with this wine. Eventually revealed deep, dark fruits, espresso, and distinct dark chocolate notes. Tannins softened a bit with air and the wine was lush on the palate. But it never seemed to come together and become the wine I've experienced in the past.

Much Maligned Merlot: Ruby red. Aroma: cinnamon, clove, vanilla and apple pie. Taste: Somewhat fruit forward, plumbs a bit with black cherries and rhubarb. Overall impression:firm tannins - the wine has plenty of life in front of it. Not as together as other wines tasted in the night. Not complex, but concentrated. Surprisingly low acidity for an Italian wine.

Steve8 Birthday Dinner (Niagara Street Cafe, Toronto, Canada): Dark ruby/burgundy colour with black tinges. Aromas of vanilla, butterscotch, blackcurrant, herbs, blueberry, and black olive tapenade. Full-bodied, with raspberry, plums, blueberry, plums, and black olive tapenade. Long finish, with raspberry and blackcurrant notes. Really nice stuff.

This stuff can make a merlot lover out of the worst merlot cynic. Solid ruby. The nose is so sexy. Super jammy ripe red fruits - the French oak is discernable but in harmony. Immenslely ripe and powerful palate. Rasberry expresso. Firm but fine tannin. Huge finish. 5-7 years and this may be off the charts.
