Even with hours and hours of air, this wine is still fiercely tannic, not offering a heck of a lot of pleasure. Five years on from my initial bottle, this wine seems like it's in suspended animation. Bury this in the cellar for another 3-5 years and hope for the best. Not rated.
Slow-ox'd for a few hours after pouring wine out to the shoulder. Much nicer than a tester bottle five years ago. It's fleshed out, showing more complexity and texture. Balanced, showing traditional Sangiovese character of dried cherries, plums/prunes, sottobosco, worn saddle leather from quality fruit and elevage in large Slavonian oak botti. Solid finish. At the start of its drinking window, this wine should drink well and possibly improve marginally over the next 5-8 years. Drink now-2023.
Decanted two hours. Medium garnet colour. Aromas of tar, violets, black licorice, rosemary, raisins/prunes, dried cherries, dark berry fruit, and a touch of alcohol. Medium-full bodied, still with grippy tannins. Needs some rare meat to soak it up and allow the fruit to pop. Moderate-long finish, a bit chalky. Nice, but I wonder how the fruit will develop, potentially dropping out before the tannins are fully resolved. Will hold remaining bottles for a few years to see what happens. Drink 2018-2022+.
