On this downside but not down for the count. This is a classic cab and this 2002 bottle is what got me into wine in 2007. Not happy that Hess now adds in Malbec. Just not the same.

Very good, big, dark mountain cabernet. This could have gone another ten years. Huge round concentrated fruit still there, with some complex age. 10 years ago this had rough edges, now smoother but still very masculine. Didn't rate higher because my preference is for more elegance, not power. But did like it.

Still fresh on the nose. Loaded with black currant, new oak, mint and a bit of creme de cassis. Medium-bodied, this has good density and the structure of quality mountain fruit. Absolutely perfectly mature, this is a joy to drink and will last several more years. 92

Brick red color, showing very little age around the edges. Not a big nose, but what is there is classic Cabernet fruit. Smooth and supple on the attack, quite dry, with firm velvety tannins embracing the tongue. Classic Cabernet fruit persists through to the lingering finish, but the wine doesn’t really evolve much. Certainly not dead, yet, but on the downside of its life. Quite nice still, but not the same showing as in the past.

I will paraphrase Mark Twain by saying that reports of this wine's death have been greatly exaggerated. From a bottle purchased upon release and cellared in pristine fashion, this particular specimen is aging gracefully. Deep red/garnet and teeming with black fruit, it adds notes of tree bark, allspice, cardamom, menthol and tobacco. Medium-to-full-bodied, freshly acidic and with nicely integrated alcohol (14.5%), it weaves in some attractive notes of oak and still has enough silky tannins to buttress the structure. The middle palate is impressively dense and the finish is equally impressive with respect to its length. Those holding well-cellared bottles of this wine will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of fruit that this 17-year-old wine retains. Decant it off of its substantial sediment and give it at least two hours of aeration. Drink now-2023.

Still a youthful medium-dark ruby. Wonderful aroma full of sweet black currant fruit, Christmas cake and campfire. Full bodied and oh so delicious! Perfectly mature, this is still loaded with sweet fruit (black currants) and plenty of tannin and fresh acidity. Best now, this should easily last another 2-3 years in tip-top condition and drink until 2023+ 92 df 9.4

Medium ruby red color. Nose has cherry, strawberry, toast. This aged very nicely. Medium bodied, but it developed a really nice character. Lots of secondary notes on the palate, hints of cedar and tobacco. Turned into a very handsome wine.

Surprised..still delicious..some tannins. but I never decant a wine older than 6 years...rather just let it slowly reveal itself over a nice dinner in the bottle...decanting can, I find, destroy an old wine before it can be consumed at one sitting. I will hold my last two bottles, one for 2014 and the last one for 2015.

A surprisingly good wine after decanting. My past Hess Collection bottles had failed after about 10 years, and this one is no different -- it's quite good at the moment, but it will probably completely flatten out in the next year or so. Decanted for 30 minutes, tried it, but it hadn't opened up. Improved over the next hour. Tannins are gone.

As promised from my 2008 note, last bottle opened 3 years later, with my buddy Stuart who was privy to the first bottle back in 08. Decanted for roughly 30 minutes before tasting. Nose of red currants and juicy red plums backed with hints of earth and cedar. The palate shows expressive notes of black currants, raspberries, creamy oak vanilla, and black pepper, combined with complex hints of bell pepper, cedar, pecan shells, mocha and caramel. Great depth and development, each sip brings out a different undertone and unveils the complexity of this wine.
Really impressed with how the wine has mellowed, these past years in the cellar dropped alot of tannin and now the mouthfeel is much, much smoother. Still has good weight on the palate and firm structure; the only difference I note from the loss of tannins is the length on the finish, which isn't a necessarily bad thing. Age has also allowed the wine to develop more complexity and I would love to see how this wine continues to develop (but unfortunately no more bottles left).
Overall Rating- A.

LS Thomas and gang - A good, meaty, tarry Napa cab that pleased the German contingent in town. Showing signs of development but still young -- some mushroom/forest floor swirling in and out, but loads of chocolatey fruit.

Some at the table felt this cab beat the Ch de Sales 98 from Bordeaux...hard to tell, but the Hess did feel a little lighter and less like a Cabernet, so it went better with the soft shell crab dish.

Gorgeous aromatics. Balanced - supple tannin and just the right amount of tartness. Medium length finish. Side by side with an 05 Larkmead, same aromatic profile but this was more integrated and a bit sweeter on the attack. I think this is entering a peak drinking window, good for another five years perhaps.

This has come together beautifully since the last bottle. The tannins have softened, and the fruit and oak are in harmony. This is an excellent value from California, and made for a great pairing with a dry aged strip.

Popped and poured. Pure cedar and red currants on the nose with the slightest hint of sweet oak vanilla. Classic Napa mountain Cab. Tannins rough and rustic like you expect from Mt Veeder. Give it 4+ years in the cellar (2102) and it should be in its prime. Plenty of fruit on the nose that should develop with more time in the bottle as the tannins soften. 95+ scores aren't unreasonable.

Clear, medium intensity red, with a ruby core. Clean aromas of blackberry, cassis, herbs, smoky vanilla. Medium acidity, medium tannin that are nice and soft. Medium bodied wine, with a 20-30 second finish. Well balanced wine. Hold next bottle for 2-4 years.

A very typical, and not very interesting, cab from Napa.
I would not buy it again. If it were $10, it would be worth it. But at this time, with 6 years of aging and 2 hours of decanting, it isn't anything special.

This is a solid cabernet with an excellent nose. Tends to be on less "unique" side with nothing that really reaches out and grabs you, but nothing in this wine is unpleasant. For this price point ($33) I just put in an order for another 1/2 case. For me, this is excellent consistent table fare.
