Stored in cool Whistler cellar less than 45 degrees F and part of a vertical tasting of Engel Clos Vougeot. Medium light ruby with cranberry nose and surprisingly sweet complex palate of raspberry and subtle soy, morphing into an outstandingly long finish. No sign of green meanies and easily the best 2004 red burgundy this taster has ever opened. A fitting tribute to the skills of Philippe Engel, as this was his last vintage. Vintners who make wines this good in disastrous vintages are superstars! Best 2025-2035.

second time having this wine out of Magnum. 1rst time in 2018 and both times a delicious wine and one of the best 2004's I've had. No hint of green on the nose. lively nose that I dare say is outshined by the palate. Good length and the fruit is present and last. very approachable with more to come.

To me, the late Engel did superb wine in 2004 vintage. Stunning nose, similar to Roumier Amoureuses, sweet and seductive, with extra touch of mint but less florals. Quite a complete package, the linearity, focus and precision on the palate is indeed excellent! I love the acidity here, salivating. No hint of GM here, very Long and complex.

Engel nailed this vintage. Very floral with hint of green note, flowers, stems and red currant. Palate was initially thin but it built weight with more time in the glass. Silky, airy and transperent with solid backbone. A very strong 04 red burg. 93-94

Very green on nose initially. Typical of vintage but this was sharp. Alongside the 04 Mugnier Moose, this was lean and angular. Unexpected for Engel.
But opened up after 2-3 hrs, and really came to life. Nose settled down, still slightly green but in a pleasant way. Palate was delicious. Not as ripe as the Moose but still with good red fruit. Fine tannins, well integrated. Decent, but not long , finish.
This wine paired really well with food. As with most Engels, this needs time to open up and blossom,

Paper filtered and decanted leaving no sediment in the filter and yielding a bright ruby liquor with a musky aroma of dark fruits and berries. The flavor was explosive on the palate - with luscious overtones of cherries, berries, sweet plum and a wonderfully long and sensual finish. What a wine. It continued to evolve for a good 4 hours in the glass and got better and better.

Dinner with M&M at GG (Giant Garoupa Restaurant): I enjoyed this. It had a beautiful nose, with black cherry aromas and some fresh-cut flowers all wreathed around wafts of toasty spice and earth - the type of nose that brings one immediately to the Southern parts of the Côte de Nuits. Really nice. The palate was just a step behind. It was not the most substantial Grand Cru, even for a Clos Vougeot, but there was still a nice depth and chew to its flavourful notes of black cherries and plums. The fruit expression had a rather ripe tone, but the wine was also nicely buoyed up by nice, juicy acidity; and like the nose, the midpalate was marked by a nice savouriness and a toasty, spicy note that led into a satisfying finish. In terms of 2004 green meanies, there were just the slightest hint of herb and bramble here and there, but not anything stalky or overtly herbal. All in all, maybe not the greatest Grand Cru, but this was a certainly a pretty accomplished Clos Vougeot, especially in the context of the of the vintage. Enjoyable.

Despite its youth this is showing some really nice balance and maturity - very open palate with reserved cherries, a touch of confected fruit but held in balance with excellent acidity and freshness. A touch of maturity and funky, earthy sous-bois and the finished with a dash of liquorice and spices. This will obviously last for years, but don't beat yourself up with guilt if you crack one open right now.

Gorgeous nose of black plummy fruit, forest floor, earth. Lovely crisp and pure flavours, intense and a long finish. Remarkably good for an 04. Very elegant and just a hint of that tell-tale greenness but it is not intrusive. Drinking beautifully now.

My rather hit and miss experience with Burgundy was prevalent in my mind when I opened this bottle. At first this was generic-sweet-NZ pinot. My heart sank. Thankfully the advice to decant was sound and 2 hours later this was a much more nuanced experience. Crisp, firm fruit and obviously very young but while the structure somewhat dominates the fruit right now you can make out the start of the evolution of the wine into something more feral and earthy. Nice now, but really needs a few more years. Is it worth £80? After drinking nothing but Australian and New Zealand pinot noirs for a month I would be veering towards saying yes. At least there is terroir in the glass with this wine.

Drunk over a beautiful lunch at Il San Pietro Restaurant, Positano, straight after decanting. Colour is bright but rather tawny, even though the bottle was in great condition.
Nose was quite lifted, with sweet farmyard scents and forest floor aromas. My wife said it smelt a bit like walking into a florist shop.
Palate was smooth and quite richly flavoured but elegantly structured. Good concentration of complex, pithy cherry tones and nice forest floor development, with some mid palate spice and well integrated but still apparent sappiness / hints of green (perhaps a reflection of 2004). Drinking very well but would benefit from more time.

Quite modern nose of toasted wood, nail varnish, redbeet stew. A bit lean on the palate but sweet core and good balance. Ever so slight alcoholic finish.

Served a bit too cold on the night, a lovely bottle but will not improve much from here. Fruity nose and palate, doesn't have the subtlety of finer vintages.

Jul-08 The Pawn Hong Kong - A simple wine, plenty of fruit, not very tannic for a young wine, very pleasant, not sure it will ever be much better than pleasant.

Floral, spicy aromatics. Strawberry palate on the thin side. Needs an hour to express.
